We had the most delightful experience at upper pines!!! MAJOR shoutout to Rangers Maryellen & Mark—they are the sweetest ever & made us feel so welcome. They helped us plan & perfect our days with all their expertise and helpful recommendations!!!
As far as the campsite, I’m convinced we had the absolute best spot #74. It’s at the end of the loop so you have extra space and privacy. Also you are RIGHT next to the Happy Isles trailhead/parking lot which means easy walking access to sooo many hiking trails!!! With that being said…that meant a lot of hikers walking through/next to our site to use the bathroom (one guy even left his cold drinks from Peet’s coffee in our site’s bear box while we were gone. Very odd. He never came back for it.) A couple of the upper pines loops were closed while we were there but we noticed that those loops had more bush barriers between road to trailhead and actual campsite…some of those “end of loop” sites might be better to avoid all the random people stomping around your site. Ultimately, while that was a nuisance at times we were out on the trail most of the day anyways and the perks of this site way outweighed the negatives. Come camp here!!!!
