About Bogan Flats Campground

Bogan Flats Campground stretches along the Crystal River in a valley of aspen groves, towering Ponderosa Pine, spruce, and willow. The setting is ideal for larger groups seeking recreation and relaxation in White River National Forest. Sites in the campground are widely spaced and offer a nice mixture of open and shaded spots, with several sites at the river's edge. The group site is located away from the main campground, offering a more private location.

We pulled into the campsite and as soon as we got out of the car the smell was so foul. This campsite is near the bathrooms, I didn’t see any reviews warning us that the smell would be so unbearable. We tried to hang out and get used to it for a bit but could not. We tried to find the site managers to see if there were any other sites we could stay the night at but couldn’t get ahold of them. We ended up leaving and finding a new campground to stay at. For $40 I would've hopped we were able to actually stay there without gagging. We are hoping for a refund or to at least warn anyone else who is thinking of reserving this site.

Excellent campsite (27). Sun in the morning, close to the river. In early July the river is too rapid and cold for swimming, especially for children. It was pleasant at the campsite in the morning, quite hot during the day, flies and mosquitoes also. Overall a good experience but will vary with the month.

Great location, remote but still had Carbondale in reach. Pull through sites right on the river looked great. Unfortunately I was in the center and that kinda sucked. No privacy at all. Would've been nice to have electric hook ups. Camp host pleasant and present.

Poor interaction with campground host. Been staying at Bogan Flats since I was a kid and never had anything but good experiences. This trip was unfortunately different. On our 1st full day we were approached by one of the hosts who said we were required to pay an extra vehicle fee of $8. We had 2 vehicles which is allowed so we were confused. The host could not explain the situation further and proceeded to escalate almost immediately by becoming very upset. She then stated we had 2 campers and needed to pay $63. Now, we have been camping with 2 trucks and an RV for years. One of the trucks has a camper topper. This has never been an issue. If it was an issue this time it could have been handled in a calmer way. From $8 to $63 within a couple of minutes and she would only accept cash which we did not have. As stated, this conversation only lasted a couple of minutes. There was another host we asked to talk to and were told that if we “thought she was mean the other guy was 10 times worse.” We told her we’d take our chances and she stormed off. Later that evening we made contact with the other host who was immediately hostile. He said we owed $130 for 4 nights (we were only staying a total of 3 nights) in a separate campsite to park the truck with the camper topper. He had also called the forest service on us. We were told they would be by the next morning to deal with us. Well, 2 rangers did show up the next day. They were very nice. Asked us to pay an additional vehicle fee for each of the nights we stayed; which we did. So, I really don’t know what happened. I don’t know why things got out of hand so fast and I still don’t know what I was supposed to pay for as each person during each interaction had a different idea of what the problem was but couldn’t really explain it in way that made sense. I enjoy staying at Bogan Flats but may think twice next time.

I was literally against the river and it was incredible. To hear the river flowing all night was such a treat. I would definitely stay at this campground again.
