The water pump did not work most of the time. When it did, the water was brown. One of the roads to the campground was closed and we had to make a 30 mile detour. Would have been nice to know that ahead of time.

Buffalo Springs Campground seems to be an undiscovered gem of a place to stay. It is a very short distance from Hwy 285, nestled in a pine and aspen forest. Sites are generally spacious, level, and well maintained. The campground host was friendly and helped me back into my site when I arrived. While I didn't discover any hiking trails or fishing access from the campground itself, both were a short drive away. I will definitely be back in the near future to enjoy staying in beautiful surroundings relatively close to home.

The campground was easily reached from the highway with a short dirt road that was well graded. Our campsite #17 felt secluded, was level and easy to set our pop-up camper on with nice picnic table and bench and also a fire pit (hooray the fireban was not active). The vault toilet was easily reached and kept very clean. The camp host was cordial and helpful. We will definitely return here to fish the area again.
The only trouble we had was that highway 285 between FairPlay and Antero junction has a closure on it to fix a bridge. You must access this campground from the southern point at Antero Junction. You cannot get there from FairPlay. We did a lot of unnecessary driving to discover this. Not sure how long the closure will be active but be sure to check before you try to get there straight from FairPlay.

Great campsite, pretty quiet and secluded. Small and beautiful campground. Only downside this trip was the camp host - he was unnecessarily in our business despite us doing nothing wrong.

We never made it to the campground due to construction on 285 and the website directions did not provide details on current road conditions. We drove past 285 on south side due to sign saying no access, drove to Fairplay and found out we could not access campground from the north. Even if we could get there it would have limited what we could have done. We want our money back but guessing we won't get it. The redeeming thing is that we stayed at Horseshoe Campground near Fairplay that was delightful with a wonderful host.

Camp host approached my camp in an aggressive manner about the dog leash rule. I had just got set up, had a 15ft cable leash set up, my dog was at my side.
One of his dogs was excessively barking, snarling, and jerking violently on his leash in his camp. He said was tired of people.

Site 18 is by far the biggest and most secluded. However, that being said it's horribly undeveloped in all open spaces for trailers/rvs. There is only one decent tent space as far as we could see. When it rains, even a decent afternoon shower site 18 is likely to flood around the table and firepit. Site 18bis the farthest from the host and the dumpsters, both if which are next to the hosts site on the opposite side. The nearest bathroom is where the water pump is. If it rains the women's side floods under the door up to the toilet. There will be a a large puddle at the entrance to the well and bathroom that takes days to dry out and no way around other than walking through another site. We've stayed here twice despite all this and the hosts each time do the bare minimum required. Our current stay the host never once changed the toilet paper in the women's bathroom and after 7 days there was maybe an 1/8th of a single roll left. He would leave for hours each day and disappear into his trailer once back. He had mentioned 2 hikes, we took the one off site 18. That was our mistake as once you're beyond the fence line the trail disappeared and we were left wondering the woods fir over an hour trying to find the "view" he mentioned. Luckily we are well versed in this, however I would fear for those not. The road beyond the campground leads to a few different trails most doable by most vehicles. The nearest town is Fairplay to the North and Buena Vista to the South. Yes you can hear the highway from this CG, but mostly just the big rigs going by, and more so in site 18 as that is the closest to the highway despite being 1 mile in on the road. This CG needs improvements to be sure but it isn't so bad. Heard coyotes nightly and saw one as well on the highway, as well as Buffalo and 2 bucks. Bring your humming bird feeders there are many nearby.

There was no indication (that I found) when I made the reservation that the highway next to the campground would be closed July 11 (until Oct). I think I deserve a refund as it was almost impossible to access. Did anyone actually make it there?

This was for site 16. Not great for a trailer. The pull-in is opposite direction of one way road and it's bumpy & uneven.
Overall campground was peaceful. Met camp host when we got there, then didn't see him again until he cleaned the toilets Saturday afternoon.
He politely asked my mother-in-law to get off his site with her dog because she was growling at him & he had his dog in the camper.
He wasn't rude about it.

Site 17 is nice and flat. We fit our camper & car nicely. Wasn't very close to other sites here. Close enough to bathroom without smelling it. It's a vault toilet - of course it stinks! Camp host was cleaning during our stay. Our encounter with him was pleasant. No hassle. Would come here again
