This campground, though primitive, was absolutely beautiful. Spillway Canyon campground is almost as far back as you can go down the approximately ten-mile dirt road, which is built on the old railroad bed and follows the South Platte River. There are three tunnels cut through the rock to drive through along the way, which were originally created for the trains which were used back in the 1930's to build the dam and reservoir. My site backed up to some large rock formations and was stunningly scenic. This is a quiet, rustic campground in a very out-of-the-way location, definitely more for people who are not merely "campers," or weekend partiers, but for those who appreciate the outdoors and nature's beauty. Fishing and even rock-climbing are some of the activities that I saw while traveling alongside the river.
One note: I only stayed two days, and was only able to book one site for one day, and then move to another site for the next day, which would've been a hassle. Well, someone at the NPS was very thoughtful and did some rearranging, and I was able to stay in the same beautiful site for both days! Great campground and I wish I'd been able to stay longer.

We showed up to site #3 and there is no flat spot to put a tent. It really shouldn’t be a site.
