About Father Dyer

Father Dyer Campground is situated on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake in the shade of a lodgepole pine and subalpine fir forest. The family-friendly campground is a popular summer destination for boating, hiking and fishing. The campground is named after Father John Lewis Dyer, one of the first Methodist ministers to tour Colorado's high country mining camps. For 20 years, beginning in 1862, he travelled the circuit encompassing Alma, Fairplay and Leadville, regularly skiing over the 13,186-foot Mosquito Pass on long, wooden skis.

Campground host Marsha does a great job year after year (this is her 20th year.) The toilets are kept very clean and stocked all the time. She sees that the campground rules are followed and educates customers. The campground itself is very nice and quiet with excellent shade and only a short walk to Turquoise Lake.

It is a very noisy campground and the trail to the lake was closed down, so you have to walk along the road to go down to the lake. If you are staying over the July 4th expect fireworks until 3 am, there is a parking lot a mile away where the local rednecks like to shoot off their life savings. I never saw a National Park ranger which was a bit concerning when some teens across from us decided to leave their campfire going to go see the fireworks in town.On the positive side, the restrooms were very clean and the campground host was excellent.

The veteran host of this CG kept the place tidy … especially the vault toilets ! Never saw any sooo clean ! Sites are treed and spacious.
Place was quiet and all campers respectful .
Nice trail for walking or biking along the lake. Dump station nearby .no Verizon service .
Only complaint is about the day use area that is only open open 8-8 so no drive access to fish the lake early morning or evening. I had to gather up my gear and take the 15 minute trail to get to the lake. You’d have to be camping in one of the CGs right on the lake.
