What a cool campsite! Our spot, #3, seemed to have been freshly updated with gravel paths and flattened tent spot. View was incredible, bathrooms clean, and a friendly camp host. Would absolutely come back

We've been staying at May Queen every year for a while now, and it's always been a great campground. Dan the campground host keeps it running smoothly and this year, we had the unfortunate luck to arrive and almost finish setting up when the Willow Fire started. He was right on top of it immediately, called it in, and was in touch with all of us in the campground to let us know the evacuation procedures if necessary and what the current directives were. I know he stayed to ensure everyone else got out safely before evacuating himself when we were directed to leave. He's always been a great host during the best of times, but he really showed out when things were closer to their worst. Thanks USDA Forest Service and especially Dan for making May Queen such an enjoyable and safe place to enjoy our time away from civilization!

The campground was closed due to the willow fire which is understandable and unfortunate. What is not understandable nor acceptable is recreation.gov has not issued a refund. Bureaucracy at it’s best.

The county closed the hwy to the campground then forest service turned the water off and I still had to pay full price

The site we had was not level, we kept sliding down to one end of our tent while we slept. Our site was also over 100 yards to the car.

From Leadville, Colorado, head west on County Road 4. Continue on the paved road about 9 mi to May Queen Campground on the right.
Highway access
The nearest major road is US Highway 24, located approximately 10 miles east of May Queen Campground.
Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
