Had a lovely stay at May Queen. We stayed in spot #1. It was a beautiful and secluded spot. Camp host had an easy firewood system.

The highway was totally closed with a road block to the campground on the main route yet Rec.Gov accepted my reservation for a campsite. We tried to go around the lake on a different road that was in tough shape and again ran into a road block saying road was only open to a certain point. As we never have been there or familiar with the area we turned around rather than risk getting struck on a road going up a mountain with no place to turn around. We found a site at Silver Dollar Campground near the main road and were very happy with that campground. The management at May Queen campground would not authorize a refund even though we could not get there.

We loved this campsite, everyone around us was very respectful, and it was very peaceful. The vault toilets were the cleanest I have seen in Colorado. The fly fishing was great in this location as well. Our campsite was very large and we enjoyed having all that space to ourselves, lots of trees for shade and privacy. Would definitely camp here again, the bugs were not bad at all while we were there. Beautiful sunny days, and nice chilly nights.

Spots vary between drive up and parking nearby (~30+ feet). Overall well kept and marked with vaulted toilet and dumpster!

I selected campsite #1 because of the ones available it was well shaded. I didn't realize it was about 100m from where the car is parked and required a bit of a walk. It was not a problem for me but was for my senior dog. Once at the campsite it was fine, but I wish that had been stated when I booked. Otherwise, the bathrooms were clean and the campground host was very friendly and helpful.

Nice to be there mid week, no crowds. They should put in the needs to know that the road is closed on the south side so you have to take the longer way around to get to May queen.

From Leadville, Colorado, head west on County Road 4. Continue on the paved road about 9 mi to May Queen Campground on the right.
Highway access
The nearest major road is US Highway 24, located approximately 10 miles east of May Queen Campground.
Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
