MAY QUEEN

About May Queen

May Queen Campground is located at the far western end of Turquoise Lake in a shaded lodgepole pine forest. Conveniently perched near the Charles Boustead Memorial Tunnel, May Queen offers easy access to boating, fishing and hiking. Incredible views of the Holy Cross and Mount Massive Wildernesses can be seen from the area, and visitors are likely to see native wildlife like chipmunks, beavers and porcupines. The Charles Boustead Memorial Tunnel is a 5.5-mile tunnel that transports water from the Fryingpan and Roaring Fork River Basins through the Continental Divide to the Arkansas River Basin by emptying water into Turquoise Lake.

We had campsite 1, Which offered some privacy, but the tent pad was awful, on a slope. Had to move a good distance from our table to have a flat space for the tent. I also noticed other campsites were way too close together and also had bad tent pads, sloping and too small. The restroom was NOT clean. The reason I gave a fair rating was because we enjoyed the peace and quiet. Few other people came due to rain I suppose.

I love this campground and go there as often as possible. It’s a small campground, quiet as a rule, clean. Camp host is nice.

β€œCons” this year are: no water available, no dump station for RV available in the park, although there is one open in Leadville. The water level of the lake is very low, which is sad.

It’s not a very good tent site, no even ground. Not even sure if hammocks would work.

The lake is very low. The best hike we found was to Timberline Lake just ready yourself for a hard walk up to the lake and take lots of water, that high altitude lake is great.
