About Camp Hale Memorial

Camp Hale Memorial Campground sits at an elevation of 9,200 feet, offering guests a wonderful setting for recreation and relaxation. Camp Hale is historic because the 10th Mountain Division, an unit of 15,000 men, trained here in mountaineering and skiing techniques during WWII. Some saw combat in Italy during the war. Most of the buildings have been torn down, but foundations and other "footprints" remain. The 99th Infantry Battalion (Viking Battalion) also trained at Camp Hale. There are interpretive signs along US Rt. 24, explaining the history and accomplishments of Camp Hale.

Camp host Traci is the best. Great knowledge of the area (showed me where to go to see a great waterfall) and always greets us with joy. Always look forward to seeing her when we camp at Camp Hale.

Everything was very clean, love the site spacing and quiet of this campground. Camp hosts Traci and Anthony were AWESOME, very responsive and informative. This was my 2nd time to camp here, will definitely go back again.

Camp Hale is a very nice quiet campground. The sites are large. The country around is
beautiful. It was interesting to learn some of the history of the base. We thoroughly
enjoyed our time there.

Beautiful area. The new metal picnic tables are nice, however the slanted pieces on the sides cause a lot of things to slide off, as we found out time and time again.

We have stayed at the Camp Hale Campground every summer for years and love it! The campground is small and quiet. The camp host does a wonderful job of maintaining the toilets and campsites. She will share insights and her observations about local wildlife and history of Camp Hale when asked, but otherwise works quietly, almost behind the scenes, to keep the place orderly. There is a healthy bear population in the area, but each campsite has a heatproof container for coolers!

As with most Colorado mountain campsites there are great opportunities for hiking, fishing and wildlife watching. The roads through the Monument provide opportunity for road, mountain bike and gravel bike cycling. BUT the OHV users in the area can be disrespectful, especially concerning speed and kicking up tons of dust. If you enjoy a great dining experience, consider going to the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse for a real treat. Reservations well in advance are needed and you will need to walk about a mile into and out of the yurt for dinner.

You will hear morning and evening commuter traffic from the Vail Valley workforce. If you have a choice, avoid US 24 during peak commuter hours.

The campground can be hot during the day due to geography, weather trends and limited number of trees at some sites. Be sure to bring your own water, as there is non available at the campground.

Beautiful campsite, peaceful, clean. And the BEST campground host (Traci). Gave us all kinds of helpful information about the area and things to see. Definitely want to return.

Very quiet campground. We stayed in Site #11 and it was perfect - backs up to a beautiful meadow. It is a wonderful base camp for exploring the whole area. You can hear the highway some but it's not too bad. It would be nice if they had water pumps but otherwise was excellent. Highly recommend.
