About Camp Hale Memorial

Camp Hale Memorial Campground sits at an elevation of 9,200 feet, offering guests a wonderful setting for recreation and relaxation. Camp Hale is historic because the 10th Mountain Division, an unit of 15,000 men, trained here in mountaineering and skiing techniques during WWII. Some saw combat in Italy during the war. Most of the buildings have been torn down, but foundations and other "footprints" remain. The 99th Infantry Battalion (Viking Battalion) also trained at Camp Hale. There are interpretive signs along US Rt. 24, explaining the history and accomplishments of Camp Hale.

Simple and beautiful. Loved the visiting Hummingbirds and even the mountain Jays that kept stealing food when our back was turned. Not terribly crowded either.

Quiet, nice campground not far from Leadville (to the south) and Minturn/Vail (to the north). As stated, there are many sites without much shade, but several with trees. Spaces are adequately separated. We had no mobile coverage with AT&T. Far enough from main highway that you don't hear it much during the day and there's virtually no traffic at night. Fun place to bike around the base of the adjacent hills on flat roads. If you're an MTB rider, there is a rough road that goes up, up, up about 3-4 miles (along roads) from the campsite.

So glad we found this place. The sites are spread out and have great views. Chuck, the campground host was great and directed us on how to get water in Leadville. Bathrooms clean and all sites looked maintained well. We road our bikes all over the memorial site, so much history of the alpine training camp from WW2. Would recommend if passing through the area!

Loved the campsite. The host was nonexistent . Our site was not clean and our reservation had not been posted. Luckily it was not crowded so it was not an issue. Anyways just not doing their job.

Our stay at Camp Hale Memorial Campground was amazing. Relaxing and quiet. The Camp Host, Traci, was the best host ever. Traci was very helpful when we arrived and friendly throughout our stay. The Fall views were spectacular. And a bull moose walked through camp for a morning drink in the stream. All in all, Camp Hale is a great place for dry camping. One caution; be sure to verify if the site is left or right "handed" for slide-out and camper doors. They're not all the same. Bottom line; we'll camp here again.
