About Zapata Falls Campground

A short drive up the gravel road that leads to the Bureau of Land Management’s Zapata Falls Campground (CG) will let visitors to the area see the San Luis Valley and Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve from a whole new perspective. The campground offers bird’s-eye views of the valley floor below, the San Juan Mountains to the west, the adjacent Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and several 14er’s and many other towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range that Zapata Falls CG sits on — not to mention spectacular sunrises, sunsets and night skies!   Zapata Falls CG has 23 single campsites, 1 group site and 1 camp host site nestled among piñon pines along two one-mile long loops. The sites on one loop are designed for tent campers. Parking spurs on the second loop vary a little in length but in general can handle RVs, towed campers, or other configurations of vehicles up to about 50 feet long.   A new trailhead in the campground supplies a link to the South Zapata Creek Trail and the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. A second trail, next door to the campground in the day-use area, leads visitors on a mildly steep half-mile hike to Zapata Falls, which gives the campground its name.

A incredible view of the expansive San Luis Valley. The wind twisted ceaders and pines are a great touch.

Lovely location. Good access. Beautiful Views. Roads in campground need work. Some RV sites not very level.

This is such a cool little campground! The sites are tiered along the side of the mountain, so pretty much all of them have an awesome view and feel fairly private. The road up to the campground has been recently paved, but the road within the campground is still pretty rough dirt, and both roads are winding and steep. I wouldn't want to arrive for the first time after dark (driving back up from one of the night programs in the park was a little scary). Site 12 would not have been my first choice based on the map (because it's in the middle of a loop), but it's all that was available, and because of the layout it was actually perfect.

Loved Zapata Falls Campground!! Wish we had known about it prior to paying for the KOA near the Great Sand Dunes NP. The views were spectacular and all of the sites seemed to be pretty level and spaced apart. No water, so make sure you bring what you need. Fire rings and tables were in good shape, and bear-safe food storage containers are at every site. Enjoy! And leave it cleaner than you found it.

Nice area close to the Dunes and Zapata Falls. The campsite was good after a clean up, there was no camp host. Do not expect many level tent sites. Screw in or auger type tent stakes are highly recommended because the ground is very rocky. I used them and had no issues getting a good anchor in the ground with no bent/broken stakes. The views are excellent and the campground is good. I will be back and would recommend if you want a cheaper camping option right outside the Dunes NP.

Great spot to camp close to Sand Dunes. The camping spots are very well set with their own fire ring and table. Had a great time there!
