This location was wonderful although I do recommend the walk in tent sites because they offer shade. Our sites had no trees to offer shade so I would suggest a canopy or gazebo. This site was close to the garbage so it had a lot of flies unfortunately. the bathrooms were always very clean and the rangers and campsite employees were very helpful.

We have been camping at the Pawnee Campground for years and have always enjoyed our stay. Facilities and campsites are always clean and well maintained. The only complaint we can give is the lack of trees in the Elk Loop because of a blow down event a few years back. We always stay in the Moose Loop. The trail system in the adjacent Indian Peaks Wilderness is absolutely stunning!

Beautiful campground, extremely clean restrooms, very well kept sites. Nice quiet trip. You're not allowed to park at any trail parking lot. Not even when they're almost empty on a weekday evening. You can't have friends or family visit or surprise you if they can't get past the gatehouse without a reservation. If you have a 2:00 p.m. trail reservation which is sometimes all you can get if you're planning a day ahead you have nowhere to go between having to take down your campsite and your reservation. Which is ridiculous when you drive past all the empty parking lots. Backpacking is nearly impossible since you need day passes as well as overnight passes despite having only separate overnight parking spots.
