This was our first trip to Pawnee Campground and it won’t be our last…We were booked for site 16 which appears on the map as a pull through with some distance between the road and camp. WRONG! A wide spot in the road similar to a turnout on many 2 lane highways just designed to give enough room to not be in the road. Needless to say we were disappointed but ready to make the best of it. I suppose if we had had a normal tent rather than a rooftop tent it wouldn’t have been too bad, but still uncomfortably close to the road and traffic.
We were fortunate to meet the gracious campground hosts who allowed us to use another unoccupied site for our trip.
The campground area is quite busy with day use parking adjacent the nearby lake, which I would guess has several hundred spaces, and is only available with a reservation/parking pass. We saw many people come up with paddle boards, kayaks, bikes etc.
We enjoyed the wonderful scenery and moose wandering around. Part of the campground is thickly forested, while another loop has nearly no trees, and resembles a parking lot… : ( In spite of the heavy use, the campground is pretty quiet and peaceful.

Beautiful campsite with view of the mountains every morning. Our site had only small trees and zero shade, so bringing some sort of shade is highly recommended. We enjoyed seeing the moose every evening over at Brainard Lake and hiking up to Lake Isabelle which was a beautiful hike that even our seven year old was able to do.
There was drinking water at the campground and the nicest vault toilets I've seen, which I believe were cleaned every day.

We were disappointed that we were not able to stay for the day, following our night of camping.
The front gate told us we had to go online to get a timed entry if we wanted to stay past the 11 am camping checkout time. There is almost no cell service within several miles of the front gate.
There should have been a way for us to have shown our Nat. Parks Pass and been able to stay.
