Our campsite was spacious, with room for two tents, and private, separated from other sites by thick stands of tall trees. The restrooms were clean and well stocked, although the closest ones to our site were closed for repairs. We were very close to Brainard Lake, and if the weather had cooperated a bit more, our stay would have been perfect!

This is one of our favorite campgrounds. Hiking, kayaking, paddle-boarding and fishing are all nearby. The clear, starry nights are the icing on the cake.

Pawnee campground at Brainard Lake Recreation area is one of the more popular campgrounds in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The vault toilets in my experience have always been well kept - very clean (as far as vault toilets go, at least). The campsites are also well kept, clean, and have bear boxes, BBQ grates, picnic tables, and campfire grates. The trees in the Moose loop are beautiful. Within walking distance of the campsite is Brainard Lake, where you will very often see moose grazing. There are several trails to gorgeous alpine lakes. The trail to Blue Lake may also feature moose. In the spring and summer the wildflowers along Long lake and the hike to lake Isabelle are delightful. Early in the season (which begins late June/early July) the waterfalls from Lake Isabelle and other alpine lakes are breathtaking. Note that in mid-August (roughly) Lake Isabelle is partially drained, as a private company has owned the water rights for a very long time.
This is a very popular campsite, so making reservations early is the only way to go.

Friendly, attentive campground hosts, and the toilet smelled like it had been cleaned out much more recently than the toilets at Brainard-area trailheads. The sites are spacious, and the campground is within easy walking distance of the main lake. I cannot remember if the path to the lake is entirely wheelchair-accessible, but I think that it might be. I’ve been coming up to Brainard Lake for years, but this was my first time camping overnight. Such a joy!
