What Guests Are Saying
Pinon Flats Campground is well-regarded for its friendly camp host, Nancy, and beautifully maintained facilities, including clean restrooms and stunning views of the sand dunes. The campground offers a peaceful atmosphere, ample tree cover, and easy access to hiking trails. However, some sites are small and not fully accessible for individuals with mobility challenges, and issues with noise from other campers have been noted. Overall, it is a memorable camping experience with great amenities.

Very well maintained and managed campground. Campsites are a little close for my preference, but otherwise well worth the stay.

The camps sites were wonderful! We had a wild turkey join us at our camp site as well as mule deer. The pinion pines smelled fantastic. The sand dunes blew us away with their size and depth. Unbelievable site! We loved camping at Pinion Flats.

Stay was great! Tip- an outside site on loop one provides the best view of the dunes. If not loop one, most outside ones on loop two also provide great views. If you are in an RV, you will definitely have to level. Overall, we can’t complain and would definitely purely stay at Piñon Flats again.

The campground itself is not that great, but the location, at Great Sand Dunes NP make it a wonderful experience. The sites are very well maintained and the bathrooms are nice (flush toilets and lit at night). However, the sites are really crammed together. Most are very small, and vehicles end up parked part way into the road because of that. Many are just pull offs. Pick your site carefully! #69 was nice in that it was one of the larger ones and the unobstructed view of the dunes was fabulous. Seems like you have to pick between a great view, and shade trees, rarely do you get both. Highly recommend walking to the dunes from the campground. It's a short walk, to a quieter area and you don't have to bother with no parking spots. The night skys were nice, but there's a lot of light pollution in the distance, making night photography not so good.

Pinon Flats campground has wonderful facilities with easy access to the gigantic sand dunes! The views from our campsite were great! My wife and I would definitely stay there again!

Great spot/location, but it was difficult to level out our rig in the site. There was not enough room to park the truck and trailer parallel, but it was a great spot with a really nice view.

Fantastic site with nice old trees to help with wind block, but also nice views of the dunes. The bathrooms were the cleanest I’ve ever seen at a campground! Water spigots were plentiful and had great pressure so it didn’t take long to fill large camp jugs. The one minor note is that two cars and two large tents would be very tight. Smaller backpacking tents would be fine.
