What Guests Are Saying
Pinon Flats Campground is well-regarded for its friendly camp host, Nancy, and beautifully maintained facilities, including clean restrooms and stunning views of the sand dunes. The campground offers a peaceful atmosphere, ample tree cover, and easy access to hiking trails. However, some sites are small and not fully accessible for individuals with mobility challenges, and issues with noise from other campers have been noted. Overall, it is a memorable camping experience with great amenities.

Restrooms were warm and cleaned daily. The park was very quiet at night, I didn’t even hear the people pack up and move out the next morning. Rangers very friendly. Trails were great. I stayed 3 nights and plan to go back.

This is an awesome camp site, up on a hill to one side of the Great Sand Dunes. I like the views, and the fact that I can hike up the dunes right from my tent.

We absolutely loved our visit to Pinon Flats campground! The only thing that happened that was less than ideal is we did not know the water was not going to be working by the dump station on the Friday we arrived. There was running water at the campground, so that was helpful....we were just looking forward to filling our holding tank for our visit. (But we got by with jugs....like our old tent days!) What a beautiful place! Very nice park and wonderful camp sites!!

We chose two campsites in loop 2, on the outer edge. We had the dunes and the mountains to our right, unobstructed by other campsites. The bathrooms were nearby. Tip: you need your own soap and towels as they are not provided. (TP is, by the way.) We had the misfortune to attend during Red Flag Warning (high wind) so firewood was not sold at the Camp Store or at the Oasis store just outside the park. The river was just starting to run at the base of the dunes (early April). I would suggest coming in early May or later to get the full river experience.

Great campsite! As other reviewers have said there’s only one campsite behind but nobody to either side. Close but not too close to the bathrooms. We were told at the visitor center if we could fit two cars in the spot without sticking in the road than it was fine - we did some Jenga and got both in (small cars though). April was a great time to be at Great Sand Dunes.
