Heaton Bay

Truly one of the best National Forest Service campgrounds anywhere and we’ve camped at 100’s! Awesome facilities, paved roads, large and private campsites and if you’re lucky enough to get one in the “C” Loop you’ll have 50 Amp power and water. Sadly so sewer or dump station. Great views and awesome paved bike paths to all three nearby towns and Dillon Amphitheater. Too bad the reservoir super low due to the terrible drought. Hopefully lots of snow and rain this winter. Great place. Don’t tell anyone. LOL.

We were in Loop E with a view of the lake (sadly very low this year). Good space between sites, clean site and restrooms. Nice access to the bike trail at the campground entrance.

The people at check-in were very nice and helpful and explained most things clearly. They definitely emphasized that food, coolers, grills, etc. needed to be secured in the bear boxes at night. What wasn't explained clearly was that my site apparently SHARED bear boxes with other campsites, or exactly which box I was supposed to use.

The campsites are also extremely close together. You could practically wink at the person camping next to you from your tent. The site itself was fine otherwise, just very squeezed in.

That night I went to secure my cooler, food and grill as instructed, only to find both nearby bear boxes completely full with other campers' stuff. Apparently those sites were sharing the boxes, which either wasn't communicated properly to me or to the other campers. Either way, I had nowhere to secure my stuff.

My vehicle was already full, and the cooler and grill had been transported on a hitch cargo carrier. I put as much food as possible in the vehicle and moved everything else away from the tent.

The next morning a ranger came by and almost wrote me a ticket for not having everything locked up. I explained the situation and got a warning.

Ridiculous. If you're going to require bear-box use and potentially ticket people for not using them, campers need adequate space and clear instructions about shared boxes.

I won't camp here again and wouldn't recommend it unless you enjoy camping on top of your neighbors, having nowhere to secure your food, and then getting threatened with a ticket for it. Or getting mauled by a bear.

Campground was very nice. Enjoyed being able to have electricity for my rig. Did a lot of great rides on the recreation path!

Nice clean restrooms, but where was the toilet paper?!? Other than the one inconvenience this is a nice campground. Such a great area that offers so many activities.

I thought the campground is nice. Inconvenient not having dump station on ground. Have to go out and pay. Dillon Res was disappointing at the time. Hardly any water

The campground is clean and in great condition. Most of the sites are roomy. The distance between sites combined with the number of trees gives a sense of privacy. The lake was down significantly but that is not the USFS fault. If near full, the walk to the lake is short for most sites.

Sad to see the lake so low. The campgrounds are still nice and well kept.

Very nice campsites with plenty of space in between. Clean vault toilets. Easy access to the reservoir, thought very low this year. Great bike riding options to Frisco, Dillon, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain.
