Nice quiet location. However, beware of the porta-potties. They were clean, but a little too full for comfort!

Decent campsite right next to the river. Had a table and campfire ring at the site. Would be difficult to park more than 1 car at any campsite

Quiet campground in December. Nice campsites. They were a little close together, so I can imagine if the campground was full it could feel crowded.
There is water, but it was yellow/orange. Maybe it was potable and just full of rust or minerals, but I was glad I had a water filter along, and I filtered the water before drinking it.

Visited Houchin Ferry in early December. Weather was great and there were only a few other campers there. The port o’ potties were very clean, to the point of zero gross smells (which is a first in my experience) and they had plenty of tp and hand sanitizer. Plus, they’re quite spacious, so if you have a child or two with you who need help with the potty, there’s room to spare. Over all, not a busy campground. And no major amenities if that’s your thing, but great for hanging with the family, tent camping, playing games, eating campfire-cooked foods, etc.

The campground is great, everything was good except the walnuts falling down was kind of scary. One of the other campers headlamp was broken on his head when a walnut fell down. Thankful we didn’t get head blunted/concussion, the walnuts missed us, but I won’t be back because of the risk.

The campsite was a stone's throw from the 4+ porta potties. There are no trails to hike without going back to the Mammoth Cave Visitor's Center. I should have checked out the trail availability before.
My daughter and I had just arrived and proceeded to unload the car and set up the tent. An older man in an older car parked in the loop and watched us. He started his vehicle and moved another car link closer. I finally asked, "Can I help you with something?" He said he was just watching us set up our tent. Creepy. He finally drove off telling us to "have a good night". We packed up and left.

We loved our stay at this campground. Loved being in a tent only site and so close to the river. My only complaint is that the sites are very close together. Would have loved a little more space.

Directions from the North: Take Interstate 65 to Exit 53 (Cave City Exit). Turn right onto KY-70. Follow 70/255, about 4 miles you turn left on 255 just before entering the park, follow this to Brownsville Rd, turn left and follow this all the way until it ends at Hwy-101, turn right go about a quarter mile to Houchin Ferry Rd. (Minit Mart on corner), turn right and follow this to campground.
Directions from the South: Take Interstate 65 to Exit 48 (Park City Exit). Turn left onto KY-255 follow this into the park, when you come to the stop sign turn left and follow this to Brownsville Rd, turn left and follow this all the way until it ends at Hwy-101, turn right go about a quarter mile to Houchin Ferry Rd. (Minit Mart on corner), turn right and follow this to campground.
Houchin Ferry Campground has access to Interstate 65, with Exit 53 (Cave City Exit) and Exit 48 (Park City Exit) providing routes to KY-70 and KY-255 respectively. Both highways lead to local roads that connect to the campground.

- Firearms must be carried in accordance with Kentucky state law, but all other weapons are prohibited. Possession of firearms in the park buildings and cave is prohibited. The use of firearms is prohibited anywhere within Mammoth Cave National Park.
