Houchin Ferry Campground

Beautiful area, no rocks or logs to pound stakes in that i could find(bring hammer). Theres a group shelter area with dual fireplaces to hang out in as well. Bathrooms were also very clean

We camped at Site 2. It’s not possible to tell from the map or pictures but Site 2 is actually conjoined with Site 3. There is no space between the 2 sites and very little space between Site 1 and 2. Because of this, the only place to set up our tent was behind the outlined area of Site 2 that has no flat ground for placing a tent. The entire area is a downward slope to the water.
When we arrived, the people camping at Site 3 had already set up. They had placed a hammock in the trees behind our site, bringing us closer than we already had wanted to be and giving us little room to set up our tent and separate ourselves from them. Our tent was slightly to the side of the hammock with the loudly snoring man and on an incline causing us to slide downward while sleeping. Saturday morning was even better when we were awoken at 6:30 AM by the people of Site 1 who were buddies with Site 3. They talked loudly and waited for their Site 3 buddies to wake up then kept crossing across our Site to hang out with each other.
We did try to switch sites for our final night but unfortunately, they had no openings. The customer service representative was very nice and helpful. I think the sites on the back and inner half looked quite a bit nicer, shaded, and flat and recommend those instead. The bathrooms were clean and the water spigot worked great.
If you go anywhere while visiting this area, please do yourself a favor and visit Fine Arts Bistro. That place absolutely smacks. I would uproot my life to go there and have their coffee and eat The Orange Avo every day. Very kind servers and great food/coffee.

The camp was very well maintained for being off the main areas of the park. The campsites are a little close together, but it's manageable. The portapotties were in surprisingly great condition. The only real negative to report was rude guests staying up and loudly screaming to eachother well past midnight one night.

The site was nice for a primitive area. We still were able to get a bit of cell service as well. Make sure you bring your own fire wood as there none to scrounge in the area around the sites. The only issue we had were noisy neighbors at two different sites. One was right next to us and the other was two sites away.

We left after one night. No running water or facilities.

Beautiful clean quiet campground right on the river, but there are zero showers unless you drive around 25 minutes one-way to the main campground showers. Also, the river is beautiful to look it, but it is not easy to get into. One narrow gravel entry, not particularly pleasant. You can get on and off your kayak there; it's functional, but not really fun for swimming. I'd only for 1 night of peaceful beauty w/o any intention to swin or shower.

Campsite a bit small, and close together, our site was right across from the portapotty, which smelled awful and they were full, not clean.

We had campsite # 11 and we were a bit confused what part of our campsite area was ours to pitch our tent . We were concerned that we may set up in campsite #10’s area. It wasn’t a huge deal but maybe suggest putting out markers. Overall the campsite was nice and we had a great time. We will definitely camp there again.

Overall stay wasn’t bad, there wasn’t specific direction on where to check into our campsite. Before we went to our designated tour we asked some employees in the general store area and post office located at the mammoth cave park. And neither employees knew where we check into the Houchin Ferry Campground. We never checked in and I had to show park rangers my original reservation that we had the spot reserved. Overall not a bad experience, but maybe having a check-in area at the campsite would be more beneficial. Just have 1-2 employees stay there for 3-5 hours for check in times-check out times.

The row of campsites by the water were extremely small and close together. With our car fully parked in our site we could barely fit our Tent. There were composite logs that had come apart in rain that had turned to saw dust at our campsite that was not taken care of before we arrived. There were no campsite hosts here, neighbors were loud partying until late into the night and no one was around to stop them. There are a few nicer campsites by the treeline if you must stay here. Overall this campground was disappointing and unpleasant.
