We had an amazing 3 days at Assateague. Site 83 is perfectly located on the sand, with some protection from the winds and very close to the restrooms and showers. When they are cleaning the porta potty's it can smell for a 30 minutes or so, but it fades quickly. There is a boardwalk to take you up to the camp site, so only carrying stuff for about 30 feet. The picnic table is big and has storage under with a slide lock it to keep coolers and food safe from the horses. The horses came by our site 2 of the 2 nights. Be sure to bring a good flashlight as the brown horses are hard to see at night and we passed one within a few feet without even realizing it until we turned around to go back as we did see another horse that had white on it. Get there at least an hour before sunset as we got there late and were setting a tent up in the dark and it was super windy -not ideal. We arrived to find someone on at our campsite, but they were leaving the next day. Not really sure what happened there, but it was fine. We had minimal flies even though we had westerly winds the one day. The water had a lot of shells the one days so water shows aren't the worst idea. The next day it was all sand. We had a great time and I would highly recommend. Amazing sunsets and sunrises. We will definitely be back!

Loved photographing the wild horses.
Next time, I’ll bring a portable shower so that I can heat up the water.

Very nice campsite that's right next to the beach (as in, this campsite is facing the beach with no other campsites in front of it). Didn't use the fire ring to start a campfire, although it appeared to be in good condition. There's an area under the table where you can store food and other belongings that might attract wildlife, although it did have a fair amount of sand in it.
I didn't use the showers. Bathrooms seemed to be relatively clean.
I also had very weak cellular data at this campsite, although there's decent cellular coverage as you get closer to the entrance area.
One note about parking: I did find that the parking lot that came before the parking lot meant for this campsite was closer to this campsite than the designated parking lot.

The site was very nice and clean. Right next to the beach! The horses didn’t bother us too much which was nice and because of the wind by the ocean, not as many mosquitos. The bathrooms were a bit more rank than normal but that’s a lot bathroom for you. People don’t seem to understand you’re supposed to close the lid after use. We only stayed one night but wish we could have stayed longer! The beach with wildlife was amazing.
The only issue we had was that the people occupying the site next to us kept walking through our campsite and by our tents all night rather than use the corridor.

I love the park and camping, a little bit of traffic to get in but honestly compare to other parks it wasn’t bad at all

Loc’d in with the Wilsons had our first visit to Assateague National Seashore Campground and can’t wait to come back. We arrived later than expected for a short weekend getaway and were greeted at our campsite by three wild horses grazing in their natural habitat. We stopped and waited patiently as they calmly ate and slowly galloped away. Due to our late arrival we didn’t expect to see any horses until the next day. So we were pleasantly surprised and they continued to wander in our campsite throughout the night. We kept our windows opened to hear the ocean waves and feel the breeze through our camper all night, which was so peaceful and serene. We will be posted a video on our channel soon about our experience. Our two night, three day experience was one to remember.

Despite the reduction in Federal Funding for the National Parks, all Rangers,Staff and volunteers were GREAT and always helpful with any ?’s or concerns. Spend time in the whole Park!! There are trails, bike paths, wonderful beaches on the ocean and bay.. the Visitor Center is very informative about the history and changes of the island, as well as in formation regarding the horses and other wildlife land and sea. Enjoy a very special place that is not commercialized simply Nature to be enjoyed. Camp if you can or go to the beach @ sunrise and enjoy the sounds and sights . Slow down and try to be in the moment. Unfortunately there were No Lifegaurds this year (funding cuts?)

This is the 2nd time we are camping here. It was nostalgic as we returned back here after 10 years. We were lucky we got oceanside campsite available at the last minute. Our campsite was number 86. Its a nice site- closer to the parking lot and toilet and a little walk to the beach. The toilets and shower areas were clean. We didnt see any horses come into the campsite at night/ during the day. Would definitely come camp here again next summer. The bugs and mosquitoes were a lot, inspite of using deet bug repellent we still had bug bites. But no complaints about it.
