Clean, Quiet and beautiful! Most sites are well spaced with good privacy. Be sure to visit the lake and the furnace.

I must say first and foremost that the vault toilets were not what I expected, So Clean and Freshly scented! Our campsite was very spacious and there was plenty of distance from our neighbors. Cory the camp host was very kind to let us borrow a hatchet to break up the wood we got from a roadside stand just before you get into town. The beach picnic area was very nice with plenty of tables.

It would have been great except for the smoke from Canada and N MN. But my camp site was surrounded by trees and they certainly did some filtering.

Forest Service Campgrounds are our favorites, and I think this one was the best one yet! Beautiful, level, private sites, great roads and amenities, beautiful lakeshore and historical sites, close to Pictured Rocks. If it had electric service it would be perfect!

I love this campground! The sites are very nice, having water available and a dump is a big plus. Location is also great. And I love the historical iron furnace. Our 4th time here. Will be back.

Getting There
Bay Furnace Campground is located in Alger County, about 3 mi west of Munising on Highway 28, at the village of Christmas, across from the Kewadin Casino.
Highway access
Bay Furnace Campground is accessible via Highway M-28, which runs directly through the village of Christmas, approximately 3 miles west of Munising.

General
- Insect repellent is encouraged for visitors to Grand Island
- Off-road vehicles not permitted
- Two pets per site
- No switching sites upon arrival
- Please Note: One RV with tow vehicle per single site or one vehicle per tent site. Most sites can accommodate 1 extra vehicle that is not included with the reservation fee. Extra vehicle will be charged a per night fee and collected at the campground.
- Reserved Sites will be held until the day following your arrival date. Sites must be occupied by the checkout time of the second day to hold a reservation or the site will be forfeited and released to other guests.
- Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation.
- Refunds: Refund requests made through www.recreation.gov will be charged a $10 processing fee. This fee is retained by the reservation service contractor along with the non-refundable reservation fee. All requests for the return of the non-refundable reservation fee and the cancellation fee will be declined by the campground concessionaire as they did not receive these fees (these are the fees retained by the reservation contractor, a different entity).
- Don't move firewood: To limit the spread of invasive tree-killing pests, firewood from outside the area is not permitted. Some states have quarantines and may confiscate your firewood. Please help protect our forests from invasive species by obtaining your firewood at or near your camping destination and burning it on-site. Visit dontmovefirewood.org for more information.
