About St. Mary Campground

St. Mary Campground is the largest campground on the east side of Glacier National Park, and is conveniently located approximately a half-mile from the St. Mary Visitor Center. The visitor center offers interpretive programs, shuttle service and Red Bus tours leaving from the center. The campground sits near the entrance of the popular scenic byway, the Going-to-the-Sun Road.Beginning August 17th through September 11th, St. Mary Campground will transition to a day-of reservation window, reservations for these dates may not be made in advance but must be made on the day of anticipated camping.Generators are allowed only in Loops B & C. No showers?? There was a nice shower facility there with 4 showers, but it is closed for the season--WHAT? After hiking in 90+ degree heat a shower is a necessity (if not for me, at least for those I'm sharing a tent with!). The closest shower is a single one in Rising Sun campground, and it closes at 8PM. At LEAST keep that one open 24/7, or better yet bring in a portable shower trailer while the roof is being replaced in the building.

There is just a general level of shabbiness there: Unfriendly gate attendants, barely working toilets, empty toilet paper holders, poor signage, etc, etc.

And I used to LOVE Glacier NP--It started going downhill about 10 years ago. I think they are trying to get rid of all the humans and turn it back into wilderness.

The campground wasn’t anything to be too excited about. The bathroom was out of order and our neighbors were super loud at 11:30 pm. I had to say something finally.

We had a wonderful private shaded spot at St. Mary’s. The weather was beautiful. We heard an excellent ranger talk about mountain goats that we all enjoyed (especially our young kids). There was some generator noise initially but none after about 8pm. Bathrooms were clean. We woke up and went to a boat tour on St. Mary’s lake. We hope to come back!

There was some generator noise initially but none after about 8pm. Bathrooms were clean. We woke up and went to a boat tour on St. Mary’s lake. We hope to come back!

Policies & Rules

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
