Beautiful location, campsite on creek. Clean facilities. No cell reception, but I saw that as a win. Hiking trailhead located within campground, plus multiple other hikes a short distance (drive) away.

This was our first time visiting the Ruby Mountains and Lamoille Canyon in N. Nevada. There are two campgrounds in this section of the Ruby Mountains - the main one (and only one open at the end of June) is Thomas Canyon Campground, about a 45 minute drive from Elko. It is a hidden gem - a smallish campground with secluded, campsites, many of them situated along Thomas Creek or its tributary creeks. The beautiful canyon walls and cliffs loom above the campground and the sunset, alpen glow on the high peaks are nothing less than stunning.
We spent three enjoyable nights/two and half days at Thomas Canyon Campground. On our first morning, we hiked to Lamoille Lake on the stock trail (may be difficult for some hikers due to the multiple stream crossings and in late June, some snow fields). On our second morning, we hiked the easier trail to Island Lake, hoping to spot the elusive Himalayan Snowcock despite our late start. Both hikes are short ( a mile and half each way) but with considerable elevation gain (being acclimated to the higher elevations here is helpful). These glacier-carved small lakes above 8,000 feet elevations are scenic and well worth the effort. And, if one is familiar with any of the steep, switch-back trails on the flanks of the eastern Sierra Nevada, the Island Lake Trail at least is relatively easy in comparison.
We experienced thunder and lightning storms two of the three nights during our visit. Two locals we encountered on our hike to Island Lake commented that such rain events were a bit unusual. Fortunately, the days were sunny and not too hot during our stay.
One other factoid that might be surprising to some - there are no bears in the Ruby Mountains, or so we were told by others. Bears inhabiting areas to the north or south would have to cross large expanses of the Great Basin desert to get here without any appreciable sources of food. Hence, no need for storing food in bear lockers!

unfortunately the combination of a fire few years ago (and many downed trees) and recent a avalanche left the sits with virtually no place to set up a tent. Fine for RV 'camping', but at this point, not tent campingnin many sites around the camprgound.

For sheer natural beauty Thomas Canyon can’t be beat. The canyon walls on either side of you are breathtaking. The Thomas Canyon Trail is a nice intermediate route with lots to see and the trailhead is conveniently located at the campground. Camp sites have more concrete than I prefer but are reasonably isolated from neighboring sites. Nice white noise from the nearby rushing creek makes for an easy nights sleep. Vault toilets needed a bit of TLC but overall nice experience!

Our stay was good and beautiful as always however many people who had made and paid for reservations months ago weren't able to use their spots because there was no camp host to insure the spots reserved were vacated by 12 for their reserved stay.

Take I-80 to any Elko exit and head south to Idaho Street. Turn south on 12th Street (from the east) or on 5th Street (from the west), to State Route 227. Travel 25 miles on SR 227 to Forest Road 660 (Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway). Travel 8 miles on FR 660 to the campground.
The campground is accessible via I-80, with the nearest exits in Elko, followed by a southbound route on State Route 227 for approximately 25 miles. The final approach is via Forest Road 660, which connects to Lamoille Canyon.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
