About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

Pros: Fairly dark skies, good sites, nice comfort facilities, nice visitor ctr. & archaeological info.

Cons: Rough road, no shade, some people arrived late & left motors running & headlights on

Staying at Gallo Camground is one of the best ways to fully experience the beauty, archeology, and trails in Chaco Canyon! This was my third time staying and I will certainly be back. The hosts and rangers are very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are kept very clean. The night sky is incredible!

The hosts and rangers were very friendly and helpful. The bathrooms with flush toilets were amazingly clean. We are used to back country camping where it is BYOB (bring your own bathroom and pack it out). Flush toilets and sinks for hand washing were clean and such a luxury. The tent site was very comfortable. We were next to the group campsite. The group the first night was loud, inconsiderate and stayed up until after 11:30. The next night there was a group of elementary school age boys. They were delightful and were also in bed by 9:30, like we were. Yay. We will certainly come back if we can ever get a reservation again.

The camp hosts.were great. Joan gave us a handful of batteries to power our telescope. The bathrooms were clean but were missing paper towels and the blower was broken. Fire pits were clean as were the campsites generally. The park service needs to find a way to open the closed sections of the campground. We had a great time

Pros - Park host was great, kept the place up well, with exceptionally clean bathrooms with running water, clean well maintaied roads, trash cans, etc. Enjoyed the petroglyphs panel at camp, and the interpretive sign regarding vandalism. Suggestions for improvements - A communal shade structure somewhere at camp would be nice, as it is a very exposed campground, and the cliffs area with some shade is now roped due to a rockfall. There was a giant ant hill at one of the camping pads with biting ants, and we could have asked to move camp but we just went with it.

We came in a small RV and were prepared for no electrical connection, water, hot showers, or sewer service. We were pleased to find that drinking water was available and there there were nice bathrooms with flush toilets. The sites were nice with adequate space between adjacent sites. Of course, the road in (from the north) was challenging and very rough in places, but not too bad if one is not in a hurry. Of course, seeing and learning about the ruins makes it completely worthwhile. The visitors center is excellent. We wished we had had a bit more time and would come again.
