What Guests Are Saying
Smokemont Campground offers a clean and tranquil setting with ample space, a nearby stream, and access to numerous hiking trails. Many visitors appreciate the wildlife, including elk sightings, and the helpful staff. While some amenities like showers are lacking, the overall experience is positive, with a focus on nature and a peaceful atmosphere. However, campsite proximity and occasional noise from fellow campers can be drawbacks.

We hap a great four days camping in April on the east side of the Smokies. The people fly fishing were having good luck and the hikers found mostly dry mild temperatures for the trails. Sadly, the extended drought required a complete burn ban, so no fires of any kind, including campfires. How strange to see a campground without the flickering orange glow from the fire rings pulling everyone around them. Still, that's better than seeing a ridgeline on fire! All the NPS staff, full-time and seasonal, were helpful and professional despite being underfunded, overworked, and understaffed.
Although the season was still early and only A and B loops were open for camping, Smokemont was still not entirely full, even though all sites showed "reserved" on Rec.Gov. The "reserve-but-never-how-up-or-cancel" pattern has become endemic the last couple of years, which deprives others who would have enjoyed those empty campsites. I wish there was some solution for this.

Nice quiet campground. Not a lot of privacy on loops A B and C. But was okay because everyone was pretty quiet (aka no kids). There are several hikes that start from the campground. We didn’t go on any because dogs aren’t allowed. FYI you can’t just show up and get a site, have to reserve online.

Had a great stay here at smokemont. Only downside was the burn ban which prevented us from being able to have fires which cut our evenings short.

Campground is clean. It has wide open space with stream flowing by. Also, a short and long hiking courses that you can experience. Also, it was quiet even during the busy hours. It’s one of the best campground in the nation.

This campground is best suited for self-contained RVs. There are no shower facilities, no hot water, and no facilities for cleaning cookware. The campsites are too close together with no vegetation between sites. Although the campground was booked to capacity, at least two sections remained closed. Smokemont may be the worst campground I've ever experienced. It's in an excellent location, but offers little else. At least it was clean.

Took my gf here for her very first experience in a real campground, she was so giddy and loved it. We had elk come right up to our camp spot and after visiting all the sights, we had a hard time leaving. She’s pretty sensitive to noise when trying to sleep especially in a tent, but said it was the best nights sleep she’s had in a long time getting to listen to the river.
