Much bigger fan of this side of the park and access to Cherokee (better than Gatlinburg imo). Also, easier to go catch sights of the elk herd on this side of the park

Nice campsite (D43), Clean campground and well maintained bathrooms. Good hiking trails with trailheads at Smokemont.

Smokemont never disappoints! I have stayed multiple times over the past few years and I love it! Bathrooms are clean, grounds are kept nice and camping by the river, well it’s top tier for me.

Smokemont was clean and well organized. There seemed to be Park personnel regularly going by in side-by-sides, which would make those prone to feeling "less safe" to feel better. The wonderful experience started when I walked in the "check-in" office and received a bright happy greeting from the NPS gal! My having stayed at Smokemont a few times before led to my not needing too many explanations. Smokemont is very close to the Oconoluftee Visitors Center, the historic Mingus Mill, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee, North Carolina (and all things Cherokee Indian), the Cherokee Casino and Events Center, and in my case "The Elk Viewing Fields."
Oh ... and on note, the faucet on the mop sink outside the "B" section restroom (#87) was running (leaking) and would not turn of completely.
