Absolutely horrifying experience.
It started with the camp hosts allowing primitive campers in when the bathrooms and showers were closed and nailed shut. This promoted grown men urinating and defecating in full view, just feet from our Airstream - which was facing the nailed shut bath house. Knowing it would be obvious who reported them, we remained silent, as we were there for an entire week.
THEN, *supposedly" some senior male Karen (again, supposedly) claimed we put our trained K9 outside om a lead at 6am (we don't even wake up until 9am-10am, and we walked our furbaby with the exceptionsof tethering him to the Airstream door when we were doing something outside) and allowed him to bark for 2 hours (this would NEVER happen - and again, he's a trained K9 who was happily snoring in bed when this blatant lie was formulated).
We suddenly realised the false claim was provably a lie, because we have security cameras (4) inside and out. Cameras showed we awoke and didn't open the doors the first time until 9.38am on the day in question (even later on the previous morning). The ranger's wife was almost revelling in repeatedly telling me that if the SUPPOSED male Karen complained (lied) again, she would *have to* call the sheriff on us??? Oh, but we should keep the camera footage that she didn't want to see, as proof. Sure. Riiight. She enjoyed threatening us.
We spent the remainder of our non-refundable week with the shades drawn and recording and saving every time we stepped out with our innocent dog should a false police report be filed by the ranger's wife.
Hellish week that we couldn't enjoy because of lying, old Karens/Kevins and disgusting, exhibitionist men.

We were there in March, wanted to check it out for possible future stays. Site 39B, 20 ft R Pod trailer. Campsites are close, but with enough personal space so you don't feel imposed on. It was very windy a couple of days, the beach is beautiful, a bit of a hike over the dunes. Because of time of year showers were closed. Restrooms are clean and well maintained, but only cold water. There's a lot to do in the area. We like to fish, the ocean was too rough for surf fishing at the time, the piers at former Bonner bridge and at the wildlife launch by Manteo are both very nice. But no luck fishing for us. Roanoke island has historical sites, shopping, dining and other beach attractions.

the campground was excellent right next to the beach with lots of trails to it . only thing wrong was that when we got there only 1 bathroom was open and no showers at all . when making reservations it didn't sat anything about it . when the weekend came the ranger closed the only bathroom down and it was a full campground . lots of things to do , lighthouses and wild life to see .

Beautiful area, truly a great spot. We had a 4WD vehicle and drove on the beach, but it’s also an easy walk from the campground if you don’t have one.
The only downside was the campground attendant, who was very rude and condescending. Our interactions with him were extremely awkward and uncomfortable.
That said, we still had a great weekend overall and would recommend camping here.

Nice campground showers weren’t open. Only one restroom open. The volunteers who run the campground were not the friendliest.
