About Canebrake Horse Camp

Canebrake Horse Camp lies in the Badin Lake Recreation Area, a hub for outdoor activities in central North Carolina's Uwharrie National Forest. The facility is a scenic and restful overnight spot with both single and double campsites. Canebrake Horse Camp is specifically designed for campers traveling with horses and offers numerous amenities for equestrian camping. If your visit to the Uwharrie National Forest includes camping without horses, please consider one of our other campgrounds: Arrowhead Campground, Badin Lake Campground or Badin Lake Group Camp.    Campers will delight in nearly 40 miles of forested horseback riding trails, as well as hiking, mountain biking, off-road vehicle riding, swimming, fishing and boating opportunities in the area. The campground is open year-round.

What Guests Are Saying

Canebrake Horse Camp is praised for its cleanliness, polite camp host, and well-maintained campsites, making it a favorite for horse campers. Many enjoy the central location to trails and appreciate the quiet atmosphere. However, there are concerns about non-horse campers occupying sites, declining maintenance, and the need for more attentive camp hosting. Overall, it remains a beloved spot for equestrian camping despite some areas needing improvement.

Love the trails in the Uwharries. New trail markers stand out but a bit confusing since old trail colors are on trees and maps.Understand new map will be coming out next year. Love the large private sites. Campground host was available and helpful.

I am an equestrian and would like to see that this particular camp is limited to equestrians. With a number of regular camping options in this area it seems to be reasonable to request this camp be limited to equestrian campers. The non equestrian campers often do not understand the safety concerns while being around equine and will entertain themselves in camp like playing soccer and riding bicycles too close to riders. I am sure they are not trying to be dangerous but this is going to cause someone or an equine to get hurt.
We only have limited camping areas and the regular camping options are much more available.
Thank You for your consideration

The camp was clean and quiet. I really like the site without the mats, they're slick so I'm glad this site is dirt for the horses.

Canebrake is one of the best horsecamps we've been to. Site are perfect, nice level spot, maps were available. Bathrooms were clean and stocked. Easy in and out of camp.
Trails were great but need better signage. Looks like the new diamond makers are going to be a great improvement!
We will definitely make a return visit!

Canebrake camps is our favorite place to go for Uwharrie. We like the amazing shower facilities, power hookups, and large parking areas for our trailers. I really appreciate the ranger staff keeping an eye on things as well by visiting a few times a day. Its very family friendly for camping and this is the fourth time I have visited. Please keep up the good work!

Throughout the year the Uwharrie National Forest performs prescribed burns. Some of these burns will be next to and around this recreation facility and may cause smokey conditions during the actual burning and for the days following the burns. Sometimes we do not make a decision until the very morning that we will be able to do the burn due to weather and staffing. If you have questions about the prescribed burning possibility please call the Uwharrie National Forest Ranger District office at 910-576-6391 for updated information.
