I know a lot of people love to ride Uwharrie. It is incredibly beautiful, especially the “Big Rocks.” They didn’t hum and send me to 1721.
Some trails are magnificent. But many of the trails we rode on, I NEVER want to do again. The narrow, steep, slippery ravines with sucking mucky bottom footing and the steep, curvy, narrow, slick and muddy root-strewn entrances and exits to the creek ravines were far more than I ever want to put my horse (or me) through again. My horse fell to his knees trying to get out of one of those chutes. These crossings were on the River Trail, trail listed as “moderate!” Nope.
That issue, coupled with the lack of blazes on several trails and several complete misalignment with the official Forest Service map, at some of the most critical trail intersections—4-way, 5-way, and 6-way—is a huge problem. Our guesses put us in some precarious situations, one that put us on the ATV trail for a few miles. I feared for our lives.
This is my second year at Uwharrie. Last year the heavy rains prevented us from riding some of the more treacherous trails. This year, We found perfect weather, coupled with a very dry spring, but still we ran into lots of yukky bogs.
I now have ridden about 90% of the Uwharrie trails. I am an advanced rider, but I will not come back.
What a wonderful, beautiful, quiet campground is Canebrake. Level, roomy, shaded sites, rubber mats in horse areas, picnic tables, fire pits, great horse wash station, horse water and people water spigots scattered around, clean restrooms and showers (but I use my own) and a very congenial camp host. Mid-week, virtually empty. Probably crazy on weekends.
I will be happy to provide more information. Thanks fir the opportunity to comment.

I was very pleased with the camp ground and the accessibility to everything. However I took notice that the camp sites was more than half taken over by tent campers with 4 wheel drive vehicles there to enjoy the trails. I understand that it’s state park but I also thought this was a equestrian camp for horse back riders. It’s very well designed for equestrian riders and was pleasant to camp there. I will camp here again however I think it needs to be designated to equestrian riders camping in camp only.

Canebrake Horse Camp is a beautiful place to stay. Large wooded sites that are level with a tent pad, huge picnic table and fire ring on each. Lots of trails to hike - but make room for those on horseback! Only drawback we found was that there wasn't fishing on site. We had to go elsewhere in Uwharrie National Forest to fish. But it was worth it because my grandson caught a large and tasty bass! We will definitely be back!
