What Guests Are Saying
Chilhowee Campground is praised for its beautiful natural setting, well-maintained facilities, and friendly camp hosts, making it a favorite for repeat visitors. The campground features clean bathrooms, spacious sites, and a lovely lake for swimming, along with access to hiking trails, including the popular Benton Falls. While the access road is narrow and winding, and some areas may appear dated, the overall experience is highly recommended for those seeking a peaceful camping getaway.

We loved our time here over Memorial Day weekend! Our spot was pretty secluded yet wasnβt too far from the bathrooms. We had enough space to comfortably fit our camper, truck, expedition, tent, and a million camping chairs. It was nice to be able to access trails especially Benton Falls. All of the overlooks on the way up the mountain were a plus as we would head down in the morning and make it back up for the sunsets. The bathrooms were clean and the camp host was very nice!

We stayed at site A11. This is a site we regularly get at least once a year. The site was clean for the most part except for food disposed of toward the back of site, which is a problem for us because we have to labs that camp with us. So this means the host didnβt check the site after the previous guest departed. Also the area around the site had Almost waist height grass in surrounding area. When I called down to the office, I spoke with a ranger who explained about budget restrictions and working with only a skeleton crew but assured me someone would be up to assess the situation. I saw no ranger all weekend except for a service truck that drove. This trip for us was also a birthday celebration and we had grandchildren coming up. I took the lack of concern of site condition upon myself and got my weed eater from my house and cleared the site and surrounding area myself. Yes it wasnβt much of an inconvenience to me since I live in Polk county at the bottom of the mountain but yet something I shouldnβt have to do since I paid for a site that should have been maintained. We have been to Chilhowee for many years and even was married at the lake up there. Itβs just sad to see that somethingβs have fallen to disrepair.

While the Chilowea Recreation area is beautiful and peaceful, site 53 is not suitable for big rig RVs. It is advertised as taking an 85 foot RV and the driveway having a "slight" slope. Our experience is that the top 30 feet is level, but it is a 55 foot 9 degree uphill slope to get to that position. A previous camper mentioned their transmission being overworked. Additionally, the gates and driveway are not wide enough for larger trailers, fifth wheels or Class A or C RVs.

The upper campground, areas A and B have a new host this year, Joe. We met him when he stopped by on our last trip to Chilhowee, nicest guy you'll ever meet.

The sites are spacious and well planned. The bath house on Loop E was kept very clean. Just wish the shower stayed on longer than 30 seconds at a time, but glad it was a warm shower. The hiking trails are good and the waterfall was beautiful. We will definitely come back.
