About Ohanapecosh Campground

Ohanapecosh Campground, on the southeast side of Mount Rainier National Park, is surrounded by old growth forest and crossed by an exceptionally beautiful snow-fed river. Close to Ohanapecosh are popular hikes to Silver Falls. The Grove of the Patriarchs trail is closed to public access until the bridge accessing the Grove is replaced. The main attraction at Mount Rainier National Park is the mountain itself, a glacier-clad volcano of immense proportions. At 14,411 ft., it dominates the skyline for hundreds of miles. Visitors travel through majestic old-growth forests, past tumbling waterfalls and historic buildings to reach sub-alpine meadows, where world-famous wildflower displays are seen in July and August. Popular activities in the park include sight-seeing, hiking, climbing and camping. Ohanapecosh campground has an elevation of 1,914 feet. Weather is dry, cool and sunny in the summer with daytime temperatures in the 60 to 80-degree range. Even though the eastern side of the park can be sunnier than other areas, weather can be variable and visitors should come prepared.

Good site for smaller group. While the site is large, you may struggle to find enough flat space for two tents. Check Google Maps Street View for better idea of what the campsite looks like. High tree cover. Creek is small. The campsite is below the road, and the driveway is on a slope.

Check when the campsite visitor center closes, for us it was 5pm. Silver Falls trail from the campsite is okay for a campsite trail, but I would rather spend the time doing Myrtle Falls or Narada Falls. There is no phone signal at the campsite, but full bars at Paradise if needed.

H7 is a great campsite. The campsite itself is on high ground, with forest to the back of the campsite, so it was private. Not sure about the campsite fitting two cars though, we could only fit one. The campsite can easily fit two large tents. High tree cover.

Overall, C23 is a great campsite, unless you don't like white noise from a nearby large river, or if you are a group of more than 2 or 3 and sitting around a campfire watching the fire is important to you. Moderate tree cover.

Pros: The campsite is private. We managed to just about squeeze in two three-man tents. There is a large river running behind the campsite, and the white noise was a nice touch for us but may be too much for those who enjoy a quiet stay. Bathrooms in C loop were clean with soap and paper towels provided, though the soap ran out on the second day. There is a truck that drives around until ~7pm selling firewood for $7 a bunch, though I wouldn't rely on it 100%.

Cons: The fireplace grate was annoying. The fireplace grate is adjustable, massive and heavy duty. The grate entirely covers 50% of the campfire, while the other half is made up of thick rows of metal, providing ~50% visibility of the fire. The firepit under the grate is shallow but manageable. When the grate is up, it is big enough that you can not see over it if you are sitting, so there is only visibility from three quarters of the firepit. Remember the smoke will blow in one direction, so the three quarters easily becomes one half. If watching the campfire into the night is important to you and you have more than 2 or 3 people, this may not be the perfect campsite for you.

Lovely campground. We stayed at E005, in late July. Lots of trees and even underbrush. It made for a quiet experience, even though the campground was full. E005 has room for a truck+trailer, or a couple cars. We squeezed 3 cars in, one night.
Enough space for 2 tents spread apart, 3 tents if you're friendly. The fire pit was good, a nice wide level area around it. We fit 7 chairs comfortably. Only a few mosquitos, and only at dusk. Just one of the people in our group got bit.

The bathrooms are not far from the site, and they were well-maintained by the camp hosts.

Easy access to the river, if you want to take a dip or a bath. And there's a nice, easy 3-mile hike right from the campsite, to a scenic waterfall. You can swim there, too.

The campground is really close, like a 3 minute drive, to the east entrance (Stevens Canyon entrance) to Paradise. AFAIK, as of 2023 August, the road from that entrance to Paradise is still closed M-F for construction and maintenance. It's open on the weekends.

We've previously stayed on the D loop, and the H loop. All the sites seem to be very nice. I haven't had a bad experience. We really enjoy Ohanapecosh, and we'll return soon.

Great Campground. Clean, well maintained. Fire guy comes around every evening. Gorgeous swimming hole (icy water but lovely on an 80 degree day!)

This is our second summer in a row Camping at Ohanapecosh. We usually like to try out new campgrounds, but this one is worth coming back to again and again. Such a beautiful place and so many things to do. I highly recommend this campground!

The rodent problem is out of control. No heads up from rangers either. We had mice in our rv crawling on us. In 200 nights camping the past couple years no animals ever. Tried lights and peppermint oil. They’re savvy critters at Ohanapecosh. Not all Site’s had bear boxes so what were you supposed to do with food - walk through another campsite every time you want something?. Rangers were generally uninformed about the park and surrounding areas. Visitor center is tired. Amphitheater disrepair is so sad. We’ve been to many NPs and State parks. This is one we’d never come back to. Ranier needs a reservation and parking pass system to help make a visit enjoyable. It was like Disneyland on a mountain. At the GC, the crowds are big too, but they have it managed well.

This beautiful campground is ideal for tents and small R.V.'s.
The ranger in charge of camping was friendly, helpful, and flexible.
Dom't expect much in the way of facilities at $20 a night ($10 Golden Age), but there was running water in the bathrooms and drinking water was available there also. Sites were almost all shaded by large trees. Generally, there was a large flat area around the table & bear locker. THe parking spaces were often less than 25 feet long, so laog trailers stay away! The river below the bridge (in the middle of the campground) was spectacular - if potentially dangerous. Trail to Silver Falls is a must see.
