The Canyon offers excellent wildlife watching, plant viewing, fishing in a Blue Ribbon trout stream, family river rafting and camping. The Bureau of Land Management administers over 9700 acres in the Yakima River Canyon area, including five developed river access sites. An overnight and day use fee is charged and reservations are accepted through www.recreation.gov, campsites will only be held until checkout time (11am) the next day. If reservation holder doesn't show up by then, the site is released. Hookups and potable water are not provided. The recreation sites are open year round, with the largest crowds filling the sites on hot summer weekends.

What Guests Are Saying

Big Pines Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained setting along the Yakima River, with spacious sites and excellent access for river activities and nearby hiking. Guests appreciate the clean restrooms and the serene environment, ideal for birdwatching and fishing. However, some visitors noted issues with train noise, site reservation mix-ups, and a lack of privacy due to close campsite proximity.

Many campsites were out in the blazing 100 degree heat and full sun, no effort to plant ponderosa pines to help shade the campsites. I looked at a the site and left for a shaded campsite.

Nice overnight stop - should be great for river rafting - but we did not have the time to explore

Early June is NOT the time to be here in a tent. We did not know this. Please learn from our mistake. If the weather app just has a picture of wind on it, stay home. 50 MPH gusts destroyed our tent and shade structure. Before that happened, we had to keep literally everything secured with rocks or ropes. Drinks in cans had to be held once they were half empty or they would get knocked right over by the wind,. Everyone there in a tent lost their stuff. Everyone in an RV stayed inside the RV. Not very fun.

The campground was very nice and clean. Camp host and BLM people were friendly. The only issue I had was the rocks they have along the road and campgrounds. They make getting a large trailer a little difficult getting in and out.

Our second time staying at Big Pines in June.
Pros:
-Beautiful scenery in the canyon
-Site 2 is right by river with easy access to go wade in water
-Site is large, level and has shade
-Weekdays are quiet and peaceful

Cons:
-Summer Friday and Saturday nights are party time, with no noise enforcement. Be ready for music, generators, and screaming swimmers past midnight.
-Only a handful of sites have shade and canyon is often very windy so making your own shade is also difficult. Canopies and awnings might not survive.
-Other campers and day users have a tendency to walk right in the middle of others’ campsites to get to the river or bathroom (especially site #1)
