The campground was closed so I was charged, but was not able to use the facility. I was not happy.

Lakeside is the only camp ground in the region that alows ATV riding (5 mph) in and out of the park. Lots of good trails to ride on. Some OHV trails connect with Little Truckee Summit. I like to fallow the old Truckee/Hobart RR line that runs right through the camp. When you drive into the camp, you're on it. The cement pillars for the train trustles are still plain to see throughout Prosser Meadows.
The lake is beautiful in the morning light. Big fire pits. Heavy duty picnic tables. I'll put a blanket down before sitting next time. (very cold) Camp sites even had Bear Boxes to keep your trash, food or just to lock up your unruly children.
The camp sites are well maintained (not a pine needle to be found on the ground) but we raked the small rocks for a better walking serface.
Truckee is a stones throw away. You've got some of the best pizza and authentic Mexican food there is.
If you like history... You are right next to the "Donner Camp". You might also want to visit the Donner State Park Museum at Donner Lake. While you're at it, take a drive up Old Hwy 40 to the Rainbow Bridge vista point. It is worth the drive!
If you're looking for a KOA... This isn't it. There is no store, showers or group activities, unless you bring the group. The toilets are waterless, but clean. There are few bathrooms and they can be quite a walk from your campsite. We understood there was an issue with their water suply, but we are independant. Plan ahead... Ask questions.
I recomend Lakeside for old school camping, ATV riding, fishing and chilling. Maybe we'll see you there? Doug and Merl.

Larger and busier than nearby Prosser Family Campground, which I rate 5 stars. Clean and quiet but for RV campers nearby who ran a generator for a couple hours near our tent, but at least they turned it off by 10pm. Sufficient pit toilets. Potable water spigots turned off for the season.

I would say 5 star because it has beauty of it's own. It is in wide space but has no decent shade of any kind but can see lots of stars as well. Great if you have solar power since there's no trees to starve it. I camped at this site twice for the past year and will do so again. One thing is all sit check in is 2pm and check out is 12 pm. I had a couple with a pickup and a trailer arrived almost three hours early of supposedly check in time, cutting 45 minutes into my time slot and asked me if I am done with my site. Please do not do this to anyone. It is rude and disrupt their peace time within their time slot. Not fault of campsite. You arrive early, you WAIT! Checking time is 2:00PM!

The campground is very nice and well maintained. I do understand the new to have water turned off but really there should be some kind of hand cleaner at the restrooms.

We had a campsite near the reservoir. We were able to kayak and paddle board easily. We were able to do a lot of birding while we were there

The good -
Campsites are mostly well spaced out. The views of the lake are lovely.
The bad -
Pit toilets only
NO WATER anywhere - all water must be brought in
Very dusty roads for hiking with ATV use
Next time we will stay in Tahoe.
