What Guests Are Saying
Columbine Campground offers beautiful scenery, clean facilities, and a friendly camp host, making it a pleasant camping experience. Many visitors enjoyed the hiking opportunities and proximity to local attractions, with some even spotting wildlife like moose. However, noise from nearby off-road vehicles and loud campers can be disruptive, particularly on weekends.

The campground itself was very nice. I saw one reviewer complain about the dirtbike noise but it didn't bother us. With the wind going through the trees you couldn't hear them when they were out on the trail and, at least when we were there, the dirtbikers were riding slowly enough through the campground to not be an issue. We had a group next to us that had 3 or 4 dirtbikes and didn't really notice them coming or going. There are plenty of trees for shade. The pit toilets were well cared for. There are several water spigots throughout the grounds.
Getting to the campground is a bit of a chore. The last couple of miles is all dirt road and relatively narrow. I don't know if trailers could pass each other in a few places. We did see a class A motorhome entering he campsite so it's certainly possible to get a big rig in there, just drive with care.
I would not recommend campsite 22 for trailers because it is at a reverse angle to the road. Backing a trailer into it is very difficult. If there had been a car in campsite 21, across the road, I don't think I could have done it. As it was I had to go drive opposite the one way direction and back in with great care. Getting out was equally harrowing, between almost hitting a large rock on the far side and almost hitting the trailer with back of the truck by turning too tight. The gutter is very deep so don't bring any equipment with low clearance. Maybe a more skilled tow driver could make short work of it but I took about 20 or 30 minutes each movement.

Great experience. Clean bathrooms. There was some leftover trash around the campground but otherwise it was well maintained. Never saw the camp host who supposedly sold firewood. So we foraged for some and a house in central city out some out on the road there.

The forest around the Columbine Campground in Central City, CO was beautiful. However, the campsites were very unlevel, and rocky , which made it difficult to level our camper or walk around the campsite. The campers in the site next to us had two golden retrievers, that were never on leash, and would come into others camp sites and disturb them.
Other complaints are that the Men's restroom near our site was not very clean, and the fire pit had not been cleaned out.

The campground was lovely but the host was surly and unavailable for any help of any kind. On the second day the bathroom was dirty.

The campground as a whole is clean and well maintained. Sites in the first loop do not have bear boxes, but the walk-in sites in the second loop do. Site #6 had many many ant-hole mounds, with huge ants, though they leave you alone. See the other reviews about the overall noise of the site. There were off-road vehicles driving and revving throughout the night, many well past midnight, 1am, etc. Not as peaceful and serene, but good if you can't find another available location.

Third time at Columbine Campground - had a great time as usual! Campground was clean. Bathrooms were clean - ran out of toilet paper by Sunday morning - it was restocked about 10, which was a little late. Otherwise it was quiet, well kept - we come here because it is close to a ton of off-road trails.

Site 024 has a great view and is set a little apart. Great spot. Be ready for OHV sounds but it isn’t overbearing.
