About Pinon Flats Campground

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is in the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado at an elevation of 8.2 ft. The dunes lie on the eastern edge of the valley at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Range. The dunefield is part of the nearly 150,000 total acres of the park and preserve that also protects alpine lakes, tundra, six peaks over 13 ft, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands. The park is part of a fragile, dynamic system that influences and sustains the tallest dunes in North America. President Herbert Hoover established the park unit as a national monument by presidential proclamation on March 17, 1932 through the Antiquities Act. The Works Progress Administration constructed the Superintendent’s Residence, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But otherwise, GRSA did not see a great deal of development during the New Deal. Park development did not occur in earnest until Mission 66. During this period, the NPS was able to construct a Visitor Center, the Pinon Flat Campground (88 sites), a picnic area, five comfort stations, six single family residences and a triplex, while also building or improving roads and trails through the park. The Visitor Center shows the motivation of the Western Office of Design and Construction to configure designs to corresponding regions using principles of “regional modernism.” Built in the Pueblo Revival style, the Visitor Center mimics adobe construction through modern materials and forms blended with traditional materials and forms seen during the CCC-era in Cecil Doty’s work. Following Mission 66, Congress designated nearly 91% of the monument as wilderness in 1976, which certainly limited the park’s ability to further develop visitor and administrative facilities. GRSA became a national park and preserve in 2000, which also included a transfer of land from the Rio Grande National Forest. The dunes have long stood as a landmark for travelers from ancient North Americans to Southern Ute, Jicarilla Apaches, Navajos, early explorers, gold miners, homesteaders, ranchers, farmers and migrant field workers, to you - today's park visitor.

The sites are pretty close together, but the views make up for that. Very cool spot.

The spot we had was wonderful with a beautiful view of the dunes a little bit of cell service and just close enough to the restrooms. It was a little more private with trees surrounding. One of our favorite sites!

Ugh! The lights at the campground are way too bright -- in particular the lights that stay on late into the night at the campground bathrooms. Please turn off or at least reduce the brightness of the campground lighting. Also, campers should be required to be quiet. That used to be the norm. We heard loud conversations at all times of day -- yapping and yammering, way more than you want to hear when camping. It's an example of how campers seem to have lost their etiquette. Other examples at this campground: turning on vehicles repeatedly during the early and late hours, blaring headlights, beeping sounds, disturbing the peace for other campers. I watched one young couple driver in their Subaru a hundred yards or so from their campsite to the bathroom in the morning. And, increasingly, campers bring dogs to the campgrounds. The dogs often bark. At this national park and campground, because of the tight space and native wildlife that is sensitive to noise, bringing along city pets should be prohibited. When dogs are around, we don't see the deer. Please consider making these changes -- reducing light, reducing noise, reducing city dogs -- as soon as possible. And please set about restoring the flow of water in Medano Creek, tackling that diversion for agriculture in the adjacent valley, because diverting the water out of the creek is hurting the national park and preserve.

Excellent campsite with nice, clean facilities. Our site location was great; however, given the location of the cement firepit, it's hard to fit 2 larger tents.

We loved that most of the sites were somewhat isolated from each other/spaced out nicely. Our site had great shade and was right next to a bathroom. Bathroom was in good condition and clean, although there were no hand dryers or paper towels, which was slightly surprising, but not a huge deal. I don't think we saw the camp host at all. Overall, a very pleasant stay, though, and we hope to go again.

The site itself was fantastic! It had a large tent pad that fit my North Face Wawona 6 Tent with Attached Vestibule Area. Beautiful view of the Sand Dunes. Quick walk to a bathroom that had flushing toilets, sinks with mirrors and soap. They even had a large sink outside you could use to help wash dishes.
Due to the fire ban we couldn't have a wood burning fire. I wish this update was in the reminder email they sent before the reservation date. We had to deal with campers on either side of us (same party) that ignored the 10p quiet hours. They were in their 20s and up drinking and being extremely disruptive until 3am. I am used to camp grounds that have camp hosts that drive through frequently to make sure everyone is following the rules. I only observed the camp host during daylight hours. I will say one thing that was refreshing was I didn't see any dogs off leash running around. I will continue to camp here but will bring my ear plugs next time.
