We loved that most of the sites were somewhat isolated from each other/spaced out nicely. Our site had great shade and was right next to a bathroom. Bathroom was in good condition and clean, although there were no hand dryers or paper towels, which was slightly surprising, but not a huge deal. I don't think we saw the camp host at all. Overall, a very pleasant stay, though, and we hope to go again.

The site itself was fantastic! It had a large tent pad that fit my North Face Wawona 6 Tent with Attached Vestibule Area. Beautiful view of the Sand Dunes. Quick walk to a bathroom that had flushing toilets, sinks with mirrors and soap. They even had a large sink outside you could use to help wash dishes.
Due to the fire ban we couldn't have a wood burning fire. I wish this update was in the reminder email they sent before the reservation date. We had to deal with campers on either side of us (same party) that ignored the 10p quiet hours. They were in their 20s and up drinking and being extremely disruptive until 3am. I am used to camp grounds that have camp hosts that drive through frequently to make sure everyone is following the rules. I only observed the camp host during daylight hours. I will say one thing that was refreshing was I didn't see any dogs off leash running around. I will continue to camp here but will bring my ear plugs next time.

This is one of my favorite places on the planet. I have camped here multiple times in the 26 years I’ve live in Colorado and brought my kids here for meteor showers and to learn the stars well into their adolescence. This is a nationally recognized dark sky park. Therefore it is utterly INCOMPREHENSIBLE that there is an LED lit Pepsi machine that shines directly into Loop One from the camp store. I get that there has to be some light at the entry sign and the bathrooms. Those could be done better, but at least they serve a purpose, point toward the ground, and while they are also LED, they are dimmer and yellower. The Pepsi machine is bright white. It is an insult to the idea of dark sky certification. Whoever authorized this needs to be fired. It is a creation of utter disrespect and disdain toward the sky and anyone interested in viewing it.
I will absolutely go back because it is beautiful, the campground is well-maintained, and the campsites are great. But this is abhorrent.

Always love Piñon Flats! Nicely spaced campsites. Beautiful views. Quiet!
This campground isn’t for the big rigs. Tents, camper vans, pickup campers and an occasional 25 ft motorhome (ours) are perfect for the locale. Generator hours are a bit restrictive, but that makes for a QUIET campground.
We’ve visited many times an expect to visit more.

There were several sightings of one bear in particular. who got food from at least 2 campsites. This campground needs bear proof boxes at each site. We stayed at Great Sand Dunes the night before and each site had a box. No bear issues.

From Highway 160, turn north on Highway 150 and follow for 16 miles to the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. Continue 5 miles north on the park's main road to reach the campground entrance.
From Highway 285, turn south onto CO-17 and follow for 36 miles (58 km). Turn east onto Lane 6 and follow for 16 miles (26 km) to Highway 150. Turn north onto Highway 150 and follow for 2.6 miles (4 km) to the entrance of Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. Continue 5 miles (8 km) north on the park's main road to reach the campground entrance.
Pinon Flats Campground is accessible via Highway 160, which is approximately 16 miles away, and Highway 285, which is about 36 miles away. Highway 150 provides direct access to the campground from both highways.

Policies & Rules
General
- You must have a reservation to camp at Piñon Flats Campground. First-come, first-serve camping is not available.
- Choose your site carefully. If you arrive in camping equipment that is larger than the site, there will not be an alternative site available and you will have to find accommodation outside the park.All tents and gear must fit within established tent pads and/or within rock wall.
- Maximum of 8 people, 2 tents, 2 vehicles per site. Not all sites fit 2 tents or 2 vehicles, a trailer counts as a vehicle. Please see each individual site details, warnings and need to know for specifications.There must be at least one adult (18+) staying in each site.
- There is no waiting list for campsites and staff cannot hold available sites at the campground.
- Total combined length limit is 35 feet. RVs over 35 feet, or combined vehicle plus trailer length over 35 feet, are not allowed in the campground. Trailers, RVs, and Vehicles cannot block the road and must be parked on pavement.
- Generator use is permitted only between the hours of , and .
- Nothing can be attached to any trees or vegetation, to include hammocks, ropes, garbage bags, etc.
- No showers, hookups or laundry facilities available in the park.
- Never leave fires unattended! Extinguish fire with water, not dirt. Firewood gathering is prohibited; wood may be purchased at the camp store.
- Utilize bear boxes at all times and keep campsite clean. No food, garbage, or cooking equipment may be left unattended. Picnic tables cannot be moved from one site to another.
- Scooters, skateboards, and inline skates are not permitted in the campground. Drones are not permitted anywhere within park boundaries. Fireworks are prohibited.
- Pets must be on leash at all times and not left unattended. Pick up after pets, dispose of waste properly.
- Group sites are tent-only; no RVs or trailers allowed.
- An entrance pass is required while in the park and is not included in the camping fee.
- For emergencies, dial 911 from your cell phone.
