About Pinon Flats Campground

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is in the San Luis Valley of south-central Colorado at an elevation of 8,175 feet. The dunes lie on the eastern edge of the valley at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Range. The dunefield is part of the nearly 150,000 total acres of the park and preserve that also protects alpine lakes, tundra, six peaks over 13,000 feet, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands. The park is part of a fragile, dynamic system that influences and sustains the tallest dunes in North America. President Herbert Hoover established the park unit as a national monument by presidential proclamation on March 17, 1932 through the Antiquities Act. The Works Progress Administration constructed the Superintendent’s Residence, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But otherwise, GRSA did not see a great deal of development during the New Deal. Park development did not occur in earnest until Mission 66. During this period, the NPS was able to construct a Visitor Center, the Pinon Flat Campground (88 sites), a picnic area, five comfort stations, six single family residences and a triplex, while also building or improving roads and trails through the park. The Visitor Center shows the motivation of the Western Office of Design and Construction to configure designs to corresponding regions using principles of “regional modernism.” Built in the Pueblo Revival style, the Visitor Center mimics adobe construction through modern materials and forms blended with traditional materials and forms seen during the CCC-era in Cecil Doty’s work. Following Mission 66, Congress designated nearly 91% of the monument as wilderness in 1976, which certainly limited the park’s ability to further develop visitor and administrative facilities. GRSA became a national park and preserve in 2000, which also included a transfer of land from the Rio Grande National Forest. The dunes have long stood as a landmark for travelers from ancient North Americans to Southern Ute, Jicarilla Apaches, Navajos, early explorers, gold miners, homesteaders, ranchers, farmers and migrant field workers, to you - today's park visitor.

Clean and scenic campground. Hiking trails from the campground, so not always necessary to drive. Very nice visitor center and friendly staff.

Our site was perfect! Easy walk to the base of the Sand Dunes. Short drive to Zapata Falls. Bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Bring a towel as there are no paper towels after washing.

Lovely campground with great views of the dunes. The sites were relatively close together and most people had campers, so it wasn't an issue. The bathrooms were way above what I expected based on the National Park website description. The toilets have running, potable water at the sinks and flush toilets. Same at the visitor's center. All the sites had a place for wood fires which was nice for the cold weather we experienced the first week of May (it snowed). We had toddlers with us (2yrs and 4 yrs). The nature trail book was terrific to keep them interested. We cross off a lot of items on the Junior Ranger booklet on this trail. Since it was cold and windy, we didn't hike up to the dunes. However we did make sand mountains on the flat part of the dunes a few hundred feet from the parking lot.

The picnic area was spacious and had nice pavilions. And the bath house / changing room at the dunes parking lot was super nice. Overall, the campground and the park amenities were above what I was expecting based on the National Park website. Nice for a 2 day visit.

Great location but the campsites are small, so even with our small popup, it took some skillful backing up to get into the small spot. Otherwise it's a great campground and you can't beat the access to the dunes.

I stayed one night at the Piñon Flats Campground, and it’ll be one that I’ll remember fondly. After visiting the dunes and making a quick trip to the Point of No Return, I went to the campgrounds and stopped by the campground store. I had a nice time talking with the owner about the area and stuff then went to my camp site and set up my tent, which was pretty easy after I figured that I could use one of the rocks as a hammer for driving in stakes. The bathrooms were surprisingly clean and accessible. Overnight there was a light blanket snow and seeing the dunes glow in the moonlight was charming. And in the morning, packing up was quick and the roads were clear. Just remember to check the weather and pack warm clothes.

Enjoyed camping in the park - able to purchase firewood when we got there as we didn't have time to stop on the way in. Sites are close but have trees in between so you don't feel too on-top of your neighbors. Bathrooms were clean! And beautiful views whether you can see the dunes or not.
