Great experience! Facilities were clean and the staff Rangers were very nice and helpful. We had lots of wildlife around (deer, turkeys, coyotes) which made the trip even more fun. We had a great view of the dunes from our site and easy hiking trails to the dunes.

Cute campground with shade from the heat. We were able to check into our site early because the people the day before checked out early. Easy dump and fill station, but the fill doesn't have a hose connector, just a gravity fill option. Highly recommend hiking into the dunes at first or last light! Enjoy! We will be back in March to see the creek.

My only complaint is that the Recreation.gov site description isn't accurate regarding the site sizes. Ours was listed as a 6x6 and there was much more room than that, we would have brought a larger tent had we known. Bathrooms were kept clean and the bear boxes were big enough to store all of our potential bear treats.

This campground is exceptionally well maintained and so convenient to access the sand dunes. The sites themselves are thoughtfully laid out and many offer privacy and shade. The facilities were literally cleaner and nicer than any campground I’ve been in. Use the Dune Trail straight from the campground to head out to the sand. It’s a beautiful walk, less crowded than the day use area and you can get to dunes faster than the main entrance. If you’re visiting in the summer plan to check out the dunes first thing in the morning while it is cool. The sun and heat are intense during the day. You can also go out there at night which is spectacular with clear skies! Zapata Falls is a short drive away and is a nice option during the heat of the day- it’s an easy one-mile hike to the water. Plan to get your feet wet and bring the kiddos and dogs so everyone can cool off.

We had a great time at Piñon Flats Campground! Beautiful views of the dunes and mountains made every moment feel special. The campground was clean, well-maintained, and had all the basic amenities we needed for a comfortable stay.
