We love Heaton Bay. Close to the water and protected from the wind when in between the islands on the water. The campground was clean and quiet. The restrooms cleaned daily and not stinky for pit toilets.

The tent sites were very nice. Well spaced with privacy and room to move. Great presence of camp hosts…they were friendly and welcoming and seemed to be on top of ‘happenings’ at the sites.

Site # 16 has a very broken down picnic table on the site. Almost unusable. Does have nice access to lake Dillon.

This is a lovely campground with easy access to some fun cities, such as Frisco or Breckenridge. We enjoyed biking part of the excellent recreation trail around the Dillon Reservoir. As mentioned in the campground description, there is little to no shade because trees were removed due to Pine Beetle infestation. There are lots of new trees, but they are still too short to provide shade. Additionally, we were disappointed that there was no dedicated spot to set up a tent at our location of Loop B, Site 15. Our site was very rocky, uneven, and had lots of vegetation. It was a challenge to find a place to put a tent.

Getting There
From I-70, take Frisco exit to 203. Turn left onto the Dillon Dam Road.
Travel northeast for 1 mi. The campground will be on the right hand side
of the road.
Highway access
Heaton Bay is accessible via I-70, with the Frisco exit leading to Dillon Dam Road, which is approximately 1 mile from the interstate.
