About St. Mary Campground

St. Mary Campground is the largest campground on the east side of Glacier National Park, and is conveniently located approximately a half-mile from the St. Mary Visitor Center. The visitor center offers interpretive programs, shuttle service and Red Bus tours leaving from the center. The campground sits near the entrance of the popular scenic byway, the Going-to-the-Sun Road.Beginning August 17th through September 11th, St. Mary Campground will transition to a day-of reservation window, reservations for these dates may not be made in advance but must be made on the day of anticipated camping.Generators are allowed only in Loops B & C. Generators are prohibited in Loop A.For information on nearby campgrounds, including on US Forest Service land or the Blackfeet Nation, take a look at Glacier National Park's website.

The area around Saint Mary’s must have had a big fire, most of the big trees are just charred sticks now. Not much shade at this site. The store area had lots of visitors and ranger activities going on.

Site C137 is great for a small camping trailer. It has a great view and is close to the shower building. We spent 6 nights here and had an excellent time.

Site B91 at St Mary left a lot to be desired. There is no shade as all the surrounding vegetation is low growing or new Aspen. The site is directly next to the bathrooms, which was convenient, but it meant people come and go constantly. The showers were a pretty long walk with no easy cut-through and the lines were too long so we didn't use them. We didn't get to explore the grounds much beyond our site to know what other amenities or trails existed.

St. Mary's is in a beautiful location and closer to Logan's Pass and Many Glacier than the west side campground. There is enough vegetation to provide some privacy but no large trees for shade. The campground was unstaffed during our visit with limited information (the visitor's center is nearby but we didn't stop). Our site was too small for our six person tent (10ft x 12ft). We had to set up the tent while walking through thorny brush and were unable to secure our rain fly without going into the brush. Our tent had to be set up uncomfortably close to the fire ring. It's a serviceable campground but not nearly the quality of the sites we stayed at in Banff and Jasper.

Perfect location for alpine start at trails along GTTSR and at Logan Pass. Exactly 30 mins from Logan Pass without traffic. We stayed in site A14, which has a decent amount of privacy thanks to plenty of foliage and sits on a 'corner' with a trail running directly to the river. Fresh water directly across the road and a bathhouse and trash cans within a 2-minute walk. Certainly not a secluded campground, but fantastic for the location and convenience.
