About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

We never reached Chaco Canyon due to conditions on the access roads, which were impassible. We didn't have a bad experience at the campground, we simply never reached it, or the park. It was the top destination on our trip, which was a huge disappointment.

Access road from the south was completely inaccessible. Option 2 was a 3+-hour detour to the north access road, which when we called the visitor center, we were told that the last 4 miles of the 30-mile unmaintained, washboard, dirt road with no cell reception through reservation land was also inaccessible. I'm sure the park is beautiful. One day I'll rent a tank so that I can get there.

Park is amazing and I loved staying at the campsite. North entrance road is dicey so think hard about your vehicle -- 4 miles of unmaintained dirt road that turns to thick muddy soup when wet (south entrance is impassable in those conditions). Last time I was here (March 2024) a storm was coming. NPS staff were amazing in sharing information and checking in on visitors. Visitors banded together too to figure out whether it was best to stay or go. Great community. I left early and made it out but saw three vehicles (2-wheel drive low clearance) stuck in the mud. Special shout out to Sharon at the NPS visitor center for being helpful and so enthusiastic about sharing the history of the site.

Fantastic little campground tucked against 100% beauty! We were there for two nights and everything is amazing! The bathrooms are spotless; the campground clean; the visitor center is just up the road, and the stars at night were unforgettable! Very much worth the drive to get there. Chaco Canyon is a national treasure. I wish we could have stayed for several more days, but we will be returning one of these years! Excellent campground!

Spent 3 wonderful nights at Gallo CG. Quiet and not many campers. Hiked South Mesa Trail. Its about 4.5 miles +-. A must do. Lots of other great hikes also. Would recommend to anybody. They did say there was fresh water available. There was none. All pumps closed. that was the last week of Feb.

This campground was just as described on the website. The bathroom was clean, and the sites were level. It's very rustic as there is no water, but that's the way it was described! It was very nice to have dumpsters to get rid of our trash before leaving. It was very quiet at night, and the dark skies were filled with sparkling stars! I would definitely recommend this campground.

The campground is quiet and well laid out. The restroom was clean and heated. The information boards were up to date and the check-in process was smooth.
