About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

I understand why we must drive 25 mi over unpaved road --- we need to learn the lesson, we need to get the message... & what better way!!

We were charged $20 / night for 2 nights when we both have senior passes & I gave my number when I registered. Don't really begrudge you the extra money -- its just the idea that we were denied what we were entitled to.

We have been to Chaco Canyon and the Gallo Campground many times. The campground is basic, but adequate, the facilities are kept clean and usually it's quite peaceful, baring the occasional camper with the Harbor Freight generator.

My primary complaint is that the Recreation.gov site often indicates the campground is almost full, when in fact there are a number of vacant sites. For example, I checked for available sites two days in advance and found a single site, which I reserved. The evening of our reservation we arrived just after 5pm to see a sign at the campground entrance indicating eight sites available. What's happening here? This can make it discouraging if you haven't been successful at reserving a site. Do you drive 20 miles of rough road just hoping there are sites available?

sites are well marked, well kept and quiet. Each has a picnic table and fire ring. No fresh water except what was in the bathroom. Don't know if this is an ommision but there was an inoperable filtered water dispenser outside the bathjroom that was not working

Great weekend and experience. I can't believe it took us as long to get there as it has, with it as close to home.

Campground Host was so welcoming and friendly and helpful. A real nice touch. Chaco awe inspiring as always and the campground right “in it.” Restrooms were spotless (and warm). Darn genny that ran and ran on someone’s rig (why don’t they all go solar!) but other than that a peaceful stay.

Stunning views of Fajada Butte from the campground. Late Oct was a nice time to be there - very low season, The Great Houses were spectacular and so was the hike to Pueblo Alto. The big rock slide in the campground had closed off a number of campsites. And also one of the restrooms was closed off. But because there were fewer campsites, the one open restroom was never crowded. It's a great campground. I've camped there at least 4-5 times throughout the year. Nice to know some things never change.

The camp ground is very nice with water and a rv dump which is not listed as an amenity. Prepare yourself for the trip through the canyon with a stop to the visitor center to familiarize yourself with the park layout and get the various Pueblo booklets to help you learn about the history of the inhabitants.

Be sure your prepared for poor road conditions getting to the park it can be rather challenging depending on the vehicle your arriving in.

The campsite had a nice bed for the tent. There wasn't much isolation from the neighboring sites, though, they are pretty much on top of one another. The have a nice eastern view which was great for the moon- and sun-rise.
