About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

There was no host or Park Employee at the campground on two of the three nights I stayed. That meant no one to see that quiet hours were kept. People ran generators and had music playing after 10Pm and long before 6AM. Bring earplugs if you want to get a night's sleep.

The Camp Ground has a tent pad for easy set-up. Potable water and flushing toilets are great. The only problem was a group of elementary school students camped in the Group Site and had no respect for other campers, running all over the campground and loudly screaming the entire time. At least they were quiet after 10 pm. Camp hosts told us to use the farthest toilet, reserving the closest one for the children. The leaders of this group were not teaching respect for the environment or fellow humans. On our final day, the toilets and water access were locked, perhaps due to the kids clogging pipes?

Wonderful camps hosts. Immaculate bathrooms. Gorgeous stars to watch at night. Bring your own firewood in with you. You won’t be disappointed.

Such a cool campground! Chaco Canyon was an incredible site to visit, and this campground allowed us to stay and enjoy the dark sky at night, then wake up early and see the canyon and the Pueblo sites with morning light. Ed, the camp host was so helpful as we ended up with a tire losing air pressure. We really appreciated his help, and hope to return some day for another visit.

Easy campground, small, close sites but location is exceptional. Bathrooms were very clean which is a tribute to the folks cleaning them.

Regretfully the campground is getting smaller because of rock falls. This impacts tent camping because you are forced to be near/next to RV's who often don't observe the NO LIGHTS/NO GENERATOR policies.

We didn't get there. The 21 mile rock/dirt road was WAY too much for the suspension of our Rialta. We drove only 7 miles in 45 minutes - faster would have been too hard on the vehicle. We cut our losses and turned around (another 90 minutes in and then 2&1/4 hours to get out). We were very disappointed.

Gallo Campground is overall very nice & the filtered drinking water & service sink are much appreciated extras! Like a lot of NPS campgrounds, only one sink in the bathroom is a real choke point at peak usage times. A minor point is that it would be nice if closures for cleaning were at a set time which would be posted & not at peak useage times. Given the demand & closure of many sites due to rockfall risk, it would be great if the campground was expanded.
