About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

The overall experience was just couldn't be better, but I want everybody to know that there are facilities. There are drinking water and toilets. Woohoo. Just like downtown

The Gallo campground was very clean and refreshing. I am concerned that the nearby fracking for oil may be creating minor tremors, weakening the cliffs and causing collapses over the campsites. The attendants were very helpful explaining expectations. Thank you for a fine place to be at Chaco.

Nice campground, running water is great. Clean, no bugs or critters.. Scenery is amazing, Chaco is incredible in general. Lots of people and loud/lights, and to many RV's like most campgrounds these days, but mostly quiet around 9-10am. Hosts were excellent, very knowledgeable and nice. Would stay again or recommend for sure.

Great campground in a remote park. Be prepared for a rough road for access. That is part of the charm.

This is a great dark sky campground. The hosts were excellent, meeting us at the entry, and helping us find our site. Great hike right out of the CG.

Unfortunately I was there the day of the eclipse and we were literally held up at the gate until people left the Park—which they didn’t do! The park staff was wonderful with all the frustrated visitors and I circled the canyon trying to get a spot at the sites

On tve other hand the park had special events with a lecture and time to look through tve parks telescope in the observatory as well as though guest astronomers telescopes. Great evening!
Since I was able to get a camp spot at Gallo campground the next day was mellow and I saw all I wanted plus got in a great hike!
The campground host was wonderful through all the chaos of the eclipse and the campground itself!
But of Course! He’s an Alaskan!
5 star experience ( questionnaire won’t light up the stars for me!)

Chaco Canyon is an absolutely stunning and hugely interesting place. It's imperative that you do a bit of research before coming, esp. about history and Native Americans and how to respect the culture and the land.
Gallo Campground: This is a beautiful but quite small and tight campground. Even smaller now that they have closed parts off due to rockfall. As long as people are respectful of each other things will go very well. Here is some advice: use a red flashlight only, since many of us are stargazers and white light will ruin everyone's experience instantly. Don't use any other lights please! Also please don't slam doors as the sound echos off the canyon walls and drives us all nuts. If you are tuned in to the land and sky, this campground will offer a thrilling experience of one of the most beautiful places in the Southwest US.

Excellent camping experience. Minimal noise at bedtime and during the night. Very, very clean. Rest rooms were more clean than the hotels I stayed in to get to the site. Amazing star views due to no lights. No cell coverage at the campground but you can get service on some of the rim type hikes.

Campers were extremely friendly andI felt very safe there.

Only improvement I could recommend is the Visitor Center never answers their phone to allow you to check on road conditions into the site or verify reservation.

I would suggest taking the north road into Chaco.

Love this campground though it is completely exposed so do not expect any shade during the day. It is well maintained with great bathroom facilities. Bring water! There is none on site. Also note that having a fire might be frowned on. We were asked to put ours out by the camp host for better star gazing which we thought was odd
