About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

Very nice campgrounds in a beautiful setting. Bring your own awning for shade, especially in hot months!

Remote location difficult to access but worth the effort - if camping be prepared for no showers - there is really only a site and drinking water provided - No wifi to speak of. Have to climb to the top of the campsite to access it. That said you get incredible night skies and silence you can hear.
The ruins are powerful and leave you pondering why on earth anyone would build sometime so grand and impressive - in what is now the middle of nowhere [back in the day of course it was not the middle of nowhere it the center of a grand SW empire ] - 20 miles to nearest good road.

The campsite is the worst I’ve ever experienced. Packed with no space between camp sites. Never again

Campsite 28 was the low point in the campground. Due to rain we had to deal with standing water during our stay. Take this site out and save the next campers from this ordeal.

Bathrooms were very clean and well-maintained. Campground was very quiet, and water was available. I was in a pickup with a camper shell, and getting into and out of my site was easy. It is the desert so there are no real trees in the campground, just shrubs, but it is in a pretty spot set up against the cliffs. Has great views too. I did not interact with the CG hosts, but both were there, on-site, the whole time. A great place to stay overnight or for a couple of nights when hiking Chaco. Will definitely return.

The road into Chaco CHNP is VERY rough, wash-boardy, and slow-going (if you value your vehicle). But once in Chaco, it was awe-inspiring. The Gallo campground had all that we needed--water, bathrooms, level sites, even a few juniper trees, although it's fairly open.

Awesome place to visit. Used both roads in and out of the park as predicted. Prepare to drive "rat patrol." Glad there was limited traffic and no mud. Quite visiting the ruins, but campground neighbors were noisy until 1 AM.

Great Camp ground! You’re right next to some cliff dewllings and petrographs at your camp sights. Bathrooms and the water annemites were great as well. Highly recommend staying here. The night sky was also incredible. Just an fyi there are lots of bugs at night so be prepared for that and the hot desert heat in the summers

Excellent backcountry campground away from city lights. Beautiful natural surroundings with great well marked hiking trails. Sunrises and sunsets were spectacular.
