About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

The park is very beautiful. The location of the campground is perfect. Just the roads to the park are not the best.

The campground was very nice, and the staff were helpful.

We were camping with the dogs, and it was really nice having the Wijiji trail so close to the camp site so that we could walk them easily when we were at camp. The South Mesa trail was an excellent way to get some spectacular views of the Canyon and beyond. We also appreciated the efforts to protect the delicate environment and ecological sites.

Amazing place, very remote, down a rough road for 5-7 miles. Campgrounds are clean, as are restrooms. Night sky was perfect for stargazing. Hiked to many of the ancient pueblan sites. Pueblo Alto hike is daunting for the first 100 yards, then mostly flat and beautiful.

The campground was excellent! So very clean, well managed, roomy, with the nicest, helpful campground hosts. We really appreciated the heated bathrooms with flush toilets and the utility sink for disposing our gray water. Again, everything was immaculate.

Lovely volunteer camp hosts! Helped explain the hikes after the visitor center closed and we hiked the Fajada overlook trail just out of the campground. Very clean bathrooms with a heater and running water. We hope they pave the road into Chaco but once within the boundaries the roads were great.

I've stayed at this campground 3 times in the past year, and it needs a major update. A majority of tent sites are permanently closed due to a rockfall concerns, including the entire northern loop. Unfortunately, the entire campground now relies on a single bathroom facility, and those staying in a tent are limited to the less desirable interior units of the loop. There is also a shortage of dedicated RV sites, so you end up with RVs intermingled in the tent pad sites. I suggest the NPS re-designate sites near the entrance (#1-8) as dedicated RV, and restrict the eastern sites to tent only. This would help cut down on the generator noise tent campers have to deal with at night and make for a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

No problems other than 65 knot winds, snow and cold. You know, Chaco conditions...

I hope you open up more camp sites.

It was very difficult to reach this campground. We took highway 57 in and CR 7950 to depart. Highway 57 is 20 miles of dirt road with deep ruts, steep inclines and the road frequently narrows. The speed limit is 30 MPH but the conditions only allowed 5 to 10 MPH. CR 7950 only slightly better it’s also a dirt road and crosses a river. If there is water flowing it would be impassable. I consider myself lucky as we did not have water flowing across the CR 7950. There was no cell service on AT&T. The Campground was about 40 percent closed due to falling rocks. The campground is clean and the bathrooms were serviced regularly. The visitor center is close by and we enjoyed the loop access to the ruins. Overall we enjoyed our stay but there needs to be a better way to access this campground.

We enjoyed our time at Chaco Canyon. My husband and I have different levels of fitness. There were a variety of hikes/bike rides that both of us could enjoy. We camped here for four nights. The weather seemed to change every fifteen minutes. : ) This fact kept the campground on the empty side. The road into the park was very doable for a van but I would not like to be towing a trailer due to the ruts. Park staff was very helpful. The museum in the visitor center is one of the best that I've seen.
