Gallo Campground

First, don't expect private secluded campsites here -- a popular campground, with closely-spaced tent and RV sites. That said, it is a fantastic place to enjoy the canyon. Good fire rings, nice toilet facilities. Spectacular views.

My friends and I stayed in Site #10 for 5 days, close to the restroom but next to group camp sites, although that was not a problem. Unfortunately, due to a mechanical problem (we were told), there was no water for a combined 3 days, and thus no restrooms. Park staff opened the loop to allow access to the composting toilets, which was helpful. Fortunately, we had filled our water containers upon arrival, so we had plenty of drinking water. Additionally, the park host and visitor center provided additional drinking water for those that needed it. Sadly, on our last night, the campers across from us, who had previously ignored at least two warnings about leaving their dogs unrestrained, were very loud until past midnight. However, all things considered, we had a good experience, and I plan to return for a fourth visit next year!

Wonderful place but you need more than a day to really appreciate it. If all you can do is a day trip plan for a long day. Bring food, make a picnic and lots of drinks.
We spent a week camping, in an RV, and still could have spent more time.

I highly recommend camping at Gallo CG in lieu of a day trip to Chaco. We stayed 3 nights, which was just about perfect! We had time to hike and explore the ruins. Yes, the road coming in is rough. (We came in the north entrance.) We were in an F350 dually with a truck camper. We took it slowly and did fine. I would NOT attempt to drive the road when the road is wet. Visiting Chaco had been our to-do list for YEARS! It did not disappoint!!

Camp host was great! The water went out, but a crew worked through the 15 degree night to restore it! The host handed out water to tide us over. How great!

Camping at Chaco for several days is the best way to experience and explore this special place. Sites are a bit close together.

The South Loop hike was well worth the four mile round trip. Climb the hill behind the camp host to get a couple of bars from Verizon

When we arrived, the weather was pleasant and we were able to spend the afternoon hiking through and around the pueblos. What an amazing cultural site!! Our campsite was great ~ right in front of a small architectural site. The wind was minimal, so we were able to have a campfire! A pleasant evening, but during the night the temperatures dropped into the 20s and, unfortunately the pipes in the two flush-toilet bathrooms evidently froze, causing the bathrooms to flood. But, the bathrooms were still open. Our second day was glorious as we hiked around more of the pueblos. Another campfire, but again the temperatures dropped and we woke to blowing snow and temperatures in the 20s (brrrr...). At that point the bathrooms were locked due to the problems that only got worse. The camp host didn't encourage us to use the great out-of-doors because it's a protected area. . . so it meant driving 4 miles on a one-way road to pit toilets (and 5 miles back. . . )! If the weather had been good, it would have all been better, but that is no fault of the campground or the host. It's just bad luck, poor planning on our part.
