About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

What Guests Are Saying

Gallo Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained camping experience in Chaco Canyon, with stunning views, amazing night skies, and friendly campground hosts who provide valuable information and assistance. The campground is clean and organized, featuring level sites and access to hiking trails and ancient ruins. However, visitors should be aware of the rough access roads, limited privacy between campsites, and occasional issues with water and restroom facilities.

Beautiful camps with set-ups for tents, near the remains of ancestral Pueblo dwellings. Hosts were off duty so I can’t speak to that, but upkeep was great.

We had a short, lovely stay at this campground. The sites are pretty close together, but all the campers were quiet and respectful.

I attempted to answer this before, but apparently my response didn't go through.

Gallo campground was much too noisy. Campers ignore the 10 PM quiet hour requirement, and there is no enforcement. In our recent experience, people would talk late into the night, well after 10 PM. I had about 8 hours sleep over two nights.

Chaco Canyon is one of the great spiritual centers in this country. However, it seems that too many folks camp at Chaco to socialize, not to absorb the spiritual energy of the place.

My wife and I have visited Chaco many times, but the noise has only become worse with each visit. There is a campground host, but he/she is invisible. The host should go around every evening reminding campers that there is a quiet hour that should be obeyed. Other than that, there should be some enforcement procedure.

Another recurrent problem is those who show up late in the evening. They invariably make too much noise getting set up. Perhaps there should be a site near the campground for late comers. A gate should be closed at 10 PM. Should there be an emergency within the campground, the host should be able to open the gate.

We love Chaco and plan to vist in the future, but we may have to drive back and forth from Bloomington or Farmington to get any sleep,

Chaco is a magnificent location and this review is limited to the campground only. The campground is crowded! When at peak, there are hundreds of people in RVs and tents huddled about their picnic tables. Its quite efficient and the host was wonderful, but crowded, crowded... And there is no shade, no privacy, and limited space to clean dishes. The folks were mostly well behaved, but if you're looking to get away, this is not it--at least not on a holiday weekend.

Excellent platforms for tents, which helped our tent survive a thunderstorm. The host was very good, helpful and reached out to campers. We sorta wished he'd been there when we arrived, since there was some confusion over reservations (our campsite had an out-of-date reservation, not ours). We also talked with a camper who had another group insist on taking his campsite! (he moved to an empty one)
Aside from that, Gallo CG is the perfect camp for Chaco.

The camp host (Gary) was phenomenal! We mistakenly only booked 1 night (instead of 2) but he personally secured us a hard-to-get camp spot by looking at cancelations and personally securing the space for us. Very nice camp ground as well.
