About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

Gallo Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained camping experience in Chaco Canyon, with stunning views, amazing night skies, and friendly campground hosts who provide valuable information and assistance. The campground is clean and organized, featuring level sites and access to hiking trails and ancient ruins. We camped for three nights, and really enjoyed our stay. It was a good amount of time for seeing Chaco, and we had great weather to do it in. The campground is your basic without any privacy, since there aren't trees there. But having two bathrooms with flush toilets, and a place to fill up your water bottles, like they have at airports was such a bonus. It's also cool that there are small ruins right at the campground. The entire park and campground are very well done. We did a ranger guided tour of one of the sites, and found it so interesting and informative.

Campground is very clean, quiet, and conveniently located to visitors center and all the Pueblo ruins along the loop road. Great location to view the night sky! I've never seen the Milky Way so clear and bright. Amazing experience!

There was a volunteer camp host who was the best ever! She managed to sort out all the campers' mistakes and fit everyone in happily. Sherry, I think.
Campground is in as good a shape as can be expected with so many inexperienced campers trammeling everywhere! Campfiores should be prohibited always. Nobody wants to sit in the smoke pollution from somebody else's fire. Air pollution from campfires is not only very unhealthy it very dangerous. Not to mention filthy.

The entire experience was magical! Camp next to petroglyphs and Pueblo ruins, listen to the coyotes howling and elk bugling. The stars are so bright. Bathrooms were clean and the neighbors and host were friendly and wonderful. Can’t wait to camp there again!!

As with many campgrounds, going during a slow season will help avoid noisy neighbors. Chaco is best enjoyed in silence under the stars, and Gallo delivers. Water, restrrooms and even a dish wash station help make the experience even more comfy.

We were unable to attend due to road washout, and unable to risk travel to the campground. Will try again in dryer weather.

Incredible spot to stay amongst ruins and close to the Chaco Canyon attractions. Spots are somewhat close and little to no shade. The road coming into the park was atrocious but well worth every bump. Chaco Canyon is so incredible, go now!
