About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

What Guests Are Saying

Gallo Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained camping experience in Chaco Canyon, with stunning views, amazing night skies, and friendly campground hosts who provide valuable information and assistance. The campground is clean and organized, featuring level sites and access to hiking trails and ancient ruins. However, visitors should be aware of the rough access roads, limited privacy between campsites, and occasional issues with water and restroom facilities.

The first day we moved into our campsite (9) there was a tour group operating in the group campsite right next to us. The staff made a lot of noise all afternoon and evening making our first day fairly unpleasant. After they left the next day the site was nice and quiet. I don't think you should allow "for profit" tour groups to rent any sites. Also the visitor center phone number had very out of date information on their answering machine, so we didn't know if we could even drive to the campground until the day before our reservation. Those messages should be updated frequently, the ones on there in late sept were made in July. Also the staff don't seem to answer the phone, it always goes to an answering machine. This is odd since the staff was generally just sitting in chairs staring out the front door when we were there. I finally selected the bookstore option and managed to get through to someone who gave me tips on the road condition. Given the remoteness of the location the park should provide some minimal wifi to its customers.

An amazing time. Wonderful facility. I will be going back a few times at least. The hike to Alto was incredible. And getting up the the crevice for an old guy like me was particularly satisfying
Thank you for all that is done to make a place like this available.

Chaco Canyon, is a must see destination for those who are interested in pueblan cultures of the southwest . It is also a place of great natural beauty. You could spend many days here. We liked the campsites at the end of the campground as they sit up against a canyon wall with some ruins.

Campground clean and well maintained. Tent sites were large and flat. All campsites were spaced nicely with plenty of room. The ruins were amazing. Took the guided tour with a ranger. It was excellent. Would highly recommend the tour. Very informative. Our ranger, Joy, did an excellent job. Thank you for a very educational and enjoyable visit.

Chaco Canyon is one of our favorite places to camp to see the night sky. We've completed most of the hikes in the park but this camp ground also allows us to explore the Wilderness areas around there, including Bisti Badlands and De-Na-Zin Wilderness.
Our only caution is to stay away from campsite #4 if you like your privacy. Somehow a social trail to the toilets has been established and people have no qualms about walking right through your campsite to get to the toilets.
