What Guests Are Saying

Black Canyon Campground is praised for its cleanliness, well-maintained facilities, and beautiful surroundings, making it a favored spot for campers. The spacious sites, friendly camp hosts, and proximity to hiking trails and Santa Fe enhance the overall experience. However, the lack of water has been a consistent issue, and some visitors have reported problems with caterpillar infestations and site accessibility.

We really enjoyed our stay at Site 22 for a night of tent camping. This is a nice spot toward the back of the loop and has good shade cover and separation from campsites on either side. Gravel tent bed worked well and was level, and this site is also close to the vault toilet and trash cans. There is a short trail right next to this site that is a quick hike and nice to explore. We arrived a bit later in the evening (around 6pm) and never saw the campground host. Our reservation was posted on the site though, so no issues there. Only downside to this campground is no running water -- make sure to bring your own water with you! Overall, this is a beautiful campground with a lot of great hiking and nature on all sides.

Our last experience was not as good as usual. The host was pathetic. She was rarely on site. the bathrooms were dirty with urine on the floor and paper and dirt. The paper was empty for three days .They were cleaned once in the week we were there and it was only the floor, The trashcans were over flowing and some people were leaving bags by the containers, which is not good as it attracts animals. It is hard to do your job when you are not there. Our campsite had not been cleaned when we arrived and had about 50 cigarette butts. we have been camping there for about 10 years and we love it there, I feel it is a shame for one person such as her, to give this campground a bad name. I am sure many that were there with us may not return . It does not give me pleasure to criticise the host and the condition of the campground as this is not the usual conditions at Black Canyon, but I feel it is necessary in this case. I have also spoken to the supervisor of the forest service for Black Canyon. I have pictures of the bathrooms as a picture can show a thousand words. I will be returning in August and I hope the conditions are improved. We have been campers for fifty years so I do not expect home conditions, just clean bathrooms as we usually have there.

This is a beautiful campground and I would love to visit again if water was available. No where on the website does it state there is NO WATER. Other campers couldn't believe water wasn't available when they arrived. They would walk to the water valve for water by the vault toilets but no water available. A lot of them went back down the mountain and purchased water for their stay, luckily I had enough water for my stay. All most all of the sites are handicap accessible which is great, but to have no water is just unreal. I saw the camp host several times add toilet paper to the vault toilets only and they were never cleaned the four days I was there. It would be very difficult for the camp host to clean the vault toilets without water. The USFS should power wash the toilets very other day to keep them clean or provide water to the camp host so they can clean them especially during the current Covid times.... I would give this campground 5 stars if water was available and the vault toilets were cleaned. Hopefully the USFS will get there act together and get the water situation resolved.
